I saw this on the Archers board today and thought it was of interest to all message board users.

Just to pick up on one of the issues here - Nick Reynolds seems to think that there might be a move away from messageboards towards blogging

I also think users are far more likely to have their voices heard on a good, readable, well-focused blog that has contributions from more senior production staff. Isn't that the point?

Most of the blogs that I have seen that are associated with the Ö÷²¥´óÐã Gardeners World production and presentation team and also with the Gardener's World.com Ö÷²¥´óÐã magazine site are a very long way from being interactive. They are more like an extended twitter... 'what I did/am doing in the garden with a few personal bits thrown in for interest'. Some of them are interesting enough and/or informative many of them are dull. The only time I have seen one provoke any extended or interesting debate was when Carol Klein didn't get the lead GW job. Actually, come to think of it that wasn't debate either it was just a sequence of posts saying they believed she should/shouldn't have got the job.

A very enlightening article, as are the comments beneath.

I agree carmen, the blogs themselves can be interesting, but the comments are rarely so - unlike the ones this article has generated!

I think several posters on here have had the feeling that we've been steered rather enthusiastically towards the GW blogs.

I remember feeling excited when the new website opened with its promise of a new forum with an OTGF board. What came of that? I gave up even looking to see if they'd opened up for discussion after a year.

It's interesting to read what happened to the Woman's Hour MB. I never posted on that but wonder if the "low traffic" was a result of the similar heavy handed hosting that we experienced. The Gardening boards have become ungritted roads regarding the level of traffic on them!

Blogs and message boards are two very different beasts.
One cannot replace the other in my (erudite) opinion

Blogs are essentially top-down with content topics determined by the primary author. Other contributors can only reasonably discuss topics opened by the author.

Messageboards are peer to peer, with all parties equal in the question/answer/discussion.

There is no question which offers the greatest benefit for the greatest number of people.

I can see why they don't want to fund the messageboards because there are rather a lot of threads that are a bit rubbish...

But they are a really useful place to get advice and do help a lot of people, so it would be a shame if they disappeared. Comments on blogs aren't particularly thrilling.

I've not really read much of the Ö÷²¥´óÐã blogs, are any of them any good?
