Now, I know that many people have recently taken up gardening, especially fruit and vegetables, and yes, I would agree they will need help to start them off but how about something for us well seasoned gardeners. Something a little more challenging. Something to which novice gardeners can asprire. Beginners may not fully appreciate it and find it boring but it's not as tedious as being told how to sow seeds, dig holes and plant containers after over 30 years gardening.
I feel that the programme makers could address the balance and have a bit of both and not just simple beginners items.
Maybe items looking at design, combinations of plants or growing challenging flowers.
The current bias to growing fruit and veg, whilst, trendy is only a small part of gardening - bring on the rest.
Ah ha! I think that you are another candidate for the timemachine - jump in it and go back to find Percy Thrower.
He was about the last person to show you how to actually grow a plant let alone how to grow a difficult one.
Mind you, design wasn't his strong point was it ? Let's dig a pond and turn the heap of excavted soil into - a rockery ! Like a garden bound spotted dick.
Tollesburyjane, you read my mind! I'm trying to like Gardeners' World but got more irritated than inspired last week.
Even if they showed beginners how to work through a neglected border or how to identify weedlings it would be more use than sticking plants in a pot. My seven year old said, "even I can do THAT Mummy!"
Never mind, off to Lower Severalls Rare Plant Fair on Saturday - bliss!
I'm off to Beth Chatto's. Which by all accounts was created out of a car park by working with the nature and the site i.e. picking plants that were suitable.
We never get that though on GW — everything's pre-dug perfectly and plants plonked in, if they don't do well, hey it's only licence money and we can skim onto the next new raised bed, £100 container tree or weird idea.
