Without hesitation, that was the greatest waste of airtime and taxpayers' money that has ever been called a gardening programme!

How to go about producing a programme totally devoid of gardening substance at this time of year, and in a brand new garden is, for me, impossible to understand.

Jo and the wonderful Carol made it bearable. Alys if I were you, I'd get out of the playground mess before your reputation is totally ruined.

paperwhite, out of all those who commented on last week's programme, I think I was one of a very small minority who tried to be positive thinking it could only get better.

So what exactly did you find a 'vast improvement' on last week?

Was it the camera being on TB's face as he 'demonstrated' how to take the 'powys castle' cutting (apologies for spelling in advance)? Was it the wasteful 'in-fill' zooming in and out of nameless 'pretty' flowers that went on for approx. a minute? Was it the CeeBeebies new programme? Was it the unbelievable amount of airtime given over to garden gnomes? I could go one, but frankly it's not worth it.

I agree, it was utter rubbish. smiley - steam

I'm just looking forward to the new prime time gardening programme on Channel 4 to be aired later this summer with Matthew Wilson fronting it. It has to be better than this childish drivel.

    IT WAS??????
Last week's prgramme was also terrible, trifling, tripe.
I cannot understand Carol wanting to be associated with it - even Joe is infinitely preferable to the smug and rough-handed Toby. Alys is a charicature.
Ö÷²¥´óÐã have failed utterly with this programme to the disappointment of 1000's of us all........

Dire. I was going to give it a chance this week until the gnome man was on Look East and luckily warned me off wasting an hour of my valuable time beforehand.

Indeed. I'll probably be kissing the TV screen — come on Mathew show them how it should be done!

Having zipped though again on the video, there was at most 10 minutes of useful/relevant material, the remaining 50 minutes being utter drivel of 'filler'.

Bluedoyenne you do have a point, several in fact which are very true but it was so much better than last week. My last question was genuine, I really am interested in what you would like as I agree, Gardeners World isn't what it used to be. I have 'gardened' since I was very young and still enjoy it enormously, I'm hoping Carols section on pruning will help me.
Sorry if I offended you, that was not my intention.

    No offense taken Paperwhite.
I'm taking you at your word, so what I would like to see?

Soil preparation for the differing needs of plants, seedlings, cuttings, seeds etc.; planting; propagating; other people's gardens (with plants that is - not gnomes); RHS gardens; new plant introductions; advances in horticultural science; garden design, spring maintenance, autumn maintenance. The list is as long as the list of tasks necessary to create and maintain a garden throughout the year.

In short, timeless, relaxing, inspiring, comforting gardening. When I think about it from a producer's point of view, it should be the easiest programme to produce, week in, week out as the substance is there for anyone with eyes to see, but for some reason it's just not being recognised for the producer's pearl that the programme substance really is.

    Bluedoyenne

Thanks for posting a list of what they should be doing

It makes me wonder why they can get it so wrong every week

I totally agree and wrote this several times last year but like you to no avail. A weekly/monthly diary of what we should be doing with all the added bits you mentioned. Sounds easy and perfect, perhaps we should apply for their jobs.smiley - smiley
Hope you have a good weekend.

So glad to see that other viewers are reacting just as my family did last night! We have a newish allotment and so the children are now interested in watching - even they (9 and 12) found it childish! The constant camera cutting on the beat of the music (Elbow again?) drove us mad - the children can't focus on one thing before the next is up there (too young) and nor can we (too old?!)... Worst of all was the 'reality TV show' bit with Carol (whom we love)- we assumed at first that all those shown were going to be part of the classes, not that only some were going to be 'chosen'. How tasteless and what a waste of viewing time. Then there's the endless 'features' and cute titles for each section ... The bit that really puzzled me though, (it's always the little things) was the little CBeebies girl in the green coat. She was fine (though possibly out of place on GW) but surely - jeans and a hoodie for sowing seeds?? I just kept wondering if the coat would wash?!! I guess that just shows my attention wasn't on the gardening by then - and that reveals that the programme has lost its way - too much formatting means that you lose the gardening heart of the show?
