Carol can give more than three people the attention they might need to become competent pruners/propagators. Giving the process a competitive element was unnecessary, boring and passe. This seems to be the current fallback position - oh gosh, better make it competitive or people won't be interested. Wrong!
Good points. I couldn't understand why she couldn't teach them all or why reality TV has to creep in everywhere.
And do we really care ? I was loosing concentration all through the programme, when usually I would be in full alert mode ,
But choosing the three left me cold, as did gnomes and nonsense

I would love to hear what Carol REALLY thinks of all this.
It is humiliating to have to work in this 'reality tv' formulaic way for a presenter such as she who is entertaining and interesting enough in herself. Todays's GW is utter garbage and I'll be interested in what Carol has to say when she has left GW - a sad but inevitable happening in the non-too-distant future, in my view.
Good point, quitedutchbrit.
Why are the presenters going along with this? I'm losing any respect I had for them. It's like watching Stepford Wives go to Greenacre.
Is this really what they want to be doing? I wish they would all resign -they have nothing to lose but their reputations.
Why disappoint the three other gardeners? This is not The Weakest Link, The Great British Menu, or The X-Factor. It's good to see a range of people learning about gardening. Let's see how all 6 get on.
I'm not against an injection of new stuff but you've gone overboard with the changes. Evolution not revolution. I've enough of that at work - and that's not working either

Hello - this section of the programme was one which really annoyed me too, but I've said on another thread that I thought the programme was, for me, rather like The Curate's Egg - i.e. good in parts.
It doesn't seem fair, however to shoot the messenger. I'd love to know whose idea it was to have "winners" and "losers" in a sort of competition for Carol's attention. That goes for several of the other items which were shown - & I'm beginning to think that maybe I really am expected to have the attention span of a goldfish which can only be held by that (oh so boring) bit about "and the winner is .......". Ma.
Gotta have the comps and gnomes otherwise it'd all be about gardening ...
I thought GW was supposed to teach the entire gardening nation about how, when and where to prune, plant, sow, weed, thin, harvest, lift and divide, take cuttings and otherwise tend and care for one's plants and garden.
This can all be done with well focussed camera work showing the actions of a competent gardener with a grasp of the English language.
I don't want to see a chosen three being singled out above the rest of us and I certainly don't want a competition with three inevitable rejections feeling like failures. This section was yet another complete waste of valuable and scarce gardening TV time.
yes very stupid idea this compo. seems everything must fit a compo format these days? more to do with producer fad than the generous spirit fostered in gardening?
i would never exclude anyone who wanted to learn.
I so agree with you,why make it a competition,as I was watching I was thinking why cant carol teach all of them,is it the bbc thinking it will make the program more interesting,I felt sorry for carol she is such a good gardner, and really what was the point of it all, lets just see gardening.I watched beechgrove gardens, and boy did I enjoy it,the presenters were good and an Alpine gardener they visited, was not to be missed if like me you love to see alphine houses and people who enjoy there plants,I have to admit I enjoyed it a lot more then GW.
I felt sorry for carol she is such a good gardnerÂ
A good gardener she may be, but please don't feel sorry for her. She is clearly complicit in the demise of Gardeners' World, and her stream of merchandise on the back of her TV efforts will no doubt cushion her against any 'dumbing' accusations. We must assume that all the presenters have either fully approved of the recent changes, or have simply acquiesced to keep themselves high profile (I only did what I was told Guv). Either way they should be condemned, as it's the majority of viewers who are the big losers in this debacle - not them.
Yes I take youre point, the presenters are told the format of the program and they must have agreed with it,or they wouldnt be doing it.I really hope they take notice of what people are saying and stop trying to do things for the sake of it.
When do we get to start voting them off..??
I think the gnomes should be given a chance to teach Carol, Alys and Toby to garden if the recent drivvel of GW is anything to go by!!! It might be more entertaining than last weeks rubiish!
Is it really really difficult to show how to prune, take cutiings and propogate for more than 3 people? If that is so, how come the GW team spend seconds to show us how to do it?
I got the impression that Carol was NOT happy with the idea. Nor would I have been.
How old are the producers of GW?
If they are aiming the programme at twenty-year olds, I wish they would say so.
I bet the number of people they are choosing has something to do with a really lazy production need. They probably think anymore than three or four people in a shot would make it look cluttered.
Why they need to choose who is "most worthy" on telly is nothing but humiliating for the poor gardeners that don't get chosen.
This is supposed to be Gardeners World, not The Apprentice.
I really really wish they would stop making a mockery of what used to be a decent gardening programme.
For the love of Geoff will you please stop it Auntie Beeb!
