shout it out - prog on tonight- How Britan got the gardening bug ...
just me or is this a tad ironic ...
I saw it earlier when it was on Ö÷²¥´óÐã4 - it's very interesting.
Whats Ö÷²¥´óÐã4 when its at home?? Is that the old world service. Sorry but here in Wales we don't get out much.
Ö÷²¥´óÐã4 (More correctly Ö÷²¥´óÐã Four) is a Ö÷²¥´óÐã TV channel on Freeview.. Sky.. Cable.. Online..
Auntie has lots of different channels these days, on radio/TV/online

I watched this first time round and despite the fact it is a 'talking heads' programme it is very interesting. The 'heads'* are actually knowledgeable rather than the usual celebs they round-up to say something despite having no connection with the subject matter.
Definitely worth watching.
*Warning: This programme contains Christine Walkden
Don't be misled - it's essentially just a run down of gardening programmes on TV. It begins with the sentence, "It all began after the second world war..."
Full of the usually sneery celebrity commentators - only some of whom have any connection with gardening.
If I'm not mistaken, this must be the 3rd time this programme will be aired in a relatively short space of time. Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking it at all. But, if the PTB can schedule this programme 3 times or more, why can't they shift scheduled programmes of GW to either Ö÷²¥´óÐã3 or Ö÷²¥´óÐã4 when the horrible seasons are upon us? (snooker season, rugby season, football season, etc.).
Pretty much my sentiments pootles magnet. The programme should have been called "How TV got the Gardening Bug".
The Brits have always gardened from medieval times in Monastery gardens through the centuries, e.g. the Elizabethan knot garden at Hatfield House, the William and Mary garden at Hampton Court with great garden designers like Alexander Pope, Capability Brown, Humphrey Repton, Paxton, William Robinson and Gertrude Jekyll to name but a few.
The Beeb have ignored the foundations for one of our greatest activities. It's in the blood but they think it's all down to tv. Sad.
Pete
Oh dear, oh dear, I thought it was an excellent programme especially after the dire new-format GW. I's encourage everybody to watch it for themselves and make their own minds up. 90 minutes of comfort telly.
Please watch it - although it is indeed the 3rd time of showing, it is a very good programme
It is very enjoyable - make bets with your family who the talking heads will be
And which TV gardeners get a name check!
oops - got 45 seconds to wait......
AX
I enjoyed it too.
It's a bit of froth, but doesn't set out to be a serious instructive gardening programme like others I could name!
I watched this first time round and enjoyed it, brought back lovely memories of my grandparents who tended their garden in much the same way as their family with tender loving care!! I had recorded it and passed it on to my parents who had missed it. They are not great gardeners but enjoyed it all the same. My father-in-law (who was a brilliant gardener) always wore a shirt and tie, passing them down from office wear to everyday then to gardening clothes. I guess we all like a little bit of nostalgia, it certainly brought back happy memories for us. It might not be of great intellectual importance but it was great viewing after a hard day in the office.
*Warning: This programme con2/tains Christine Walkden from Carmen TothegardenmaudeÂ
Did you hit the wrong key and typed "warning" rather than "pay special attention and look out for the excellent Christine Walkden"?
Thoroughly enjoyed the programme last night, nice to see Monty, Carol and Alan on it (my three favourite gardeners. I enjoy watching Christine, she is down to earth and a very good gardener.
If the UK is so hooked on gardening why cant we have more gardening programmes, Im not talking more make over shows but programmes which teach people how to garden and plenty of visits to gardens in the UK, I would even be happy with reruns from Gardeners World with Geoff Hamilton (not on Sky).
I watched it again last night, and enjoyed the trip down the memory lane re fifties and sixties gardens that I grew up with.
What struck me most however, is how nice presenters are when not presenting!
Just chatting normally about their feelings and views.
Just confirms that most of the stuff we complain about is presenters is inflicted by the producers or directors or whoever.
Just nice, normal, not over-the- top people basically!

If they showed the presenters' hands instead of their faces, that would be a start.
I enjoyed it, a comparison between the older GW and the current rubbish.
Wouldn't it be great if we could have the talking heads telling us what they really do in their own gardens instead of GW telling us things we neither needed or wanted to know?
It could be any permutations of favourite plants, essential tools, worst gardening mistakes, bad habits, things they know now and wish they'd found out years ago, best and worst bit of GW, past and present.
could be a long programe!
I enjoyed the programme very much (missed the earlier runs). Very entertaining and a nice trip down memory lane.
Good prog idea, Crouchee, I'd watch something like that.
I watched it purely as a trip down memory lane and could enjoy it as such. Germaine Greer was such a moaner though - she could've been omitted with no loss.

...along with that smug barsteward Lawrence Llewelyn and the loopy Christine!

I watched it and thought it was great. Its hard to imagine life before garden centres! I am curious though as to why there seems to be such a downer on christine walkden on various threads, she is after all a professional horticulturist and knows what she is talking about! Just because she does'nt look young or glamorous is no reason to attack her. By all means have a go at a presenter's horticultural credentials (or lack of!, note to joe swifts joke allotment) but what they look like does'nt matter.
xxx tiarella working on it!
