What happened to Toby's blogs? Some of the ones between April and now seem to have disappeared or am I looking in the wrong place?

We have to be herded onto the blogs, it's a new rule.

And you can't discuss the programme until Miss says you can, and please sit up straight and put your hand up.

There is no point herding people onto the blogs if they are then going to remove them if they don't like the comments.

I don't know what the matter is with the Ö÷²¥´óÐã gardening team even the board hosts seem determined to treat us like the enemy and create dissent and gloom. I was quite prepared to have a jolly evening watching GW but this attitude has put the dampers on it!

There's a really interesting one from Toby about planting a big tree and you get to see his brother too.

Should I watch GW or last night's Apprentice?

Two minutes into the programme and I am upset. A 180cm Chusan Palm will cost £169.99. Ok, you can get a 10cm one for £23.99, but that was not what we saw planted. Also, better comments could have been found from the internet.
"One of the most popular and suitable palms for the UK. The Chusan or Windmill Palm from China tolerates temperatures down to -17 degrees C without problem, looking equally good in summer or winter. Trachycarpus fortunei should not be planted in very windy locations as the leaves will look tatty."

Toby's comments included the last phrase verbatim.

Who can afford to follow this advice?

    smiley - steam I wish I hadn't bothered.

I can't bear to watch anymore.

Interestingly my Aged P's were watching too and mother exclaimed "My God it's awful! What have they done to it? It used to be that you felt the presenters were talking to somebody with half a brain, now it feels like they are talking to idiots!"

Try to imagine you are the only garden centre in town, Ö÷²¥´óÐã. You start selling wilting plants no-one wants and then tell all the people queuing outside waiting to collect what they've already paid for to disperse.

I'm not going to watch GW because I don't like watching it anymore. If the programme continues on it's same downward curve, no doubt I'll read about it on here (or perhaps that'll be 'This thread has been closed').

Maybe the guys could do the odd guest slot every 6 or 12 weeks! LOL!. The girls have so much more experience and common sense than the Toby and Jug. They just wipe the floor with the guys. When we need some proper advice, we can always refer to the real guru who knew what he was talking about and was on the same planet as the rest of us, rather than doing gardening for London rooftop garden yuppies.

Worst and most pointless 30 minutes thingy ever -Joe's comment was a classic - 'worth taking an extra five minutes to do it properly' - that guy knows how stupid the whole exercise is!!!

the last few minutes in the Blue Peter shed were the nail in the coffin... I cannot stand Toby's vanity and patronising tone any longer (wouldn't even if he was inspiring about gardening - NOT) nor Alys' shrill schoolmarmy tones or smug self-satisfaction... sorry, I know I said i wouldn't be personal, but AAAAAARGH!!! ego overload...

With the introduction to exotic garden plants, my heart sank. Then TB showed how to get a big, heavy plant into the planting hole, and I thought 'thank you for that very useful tip'. A positive.

Next, the Henstead exotic garden. Again, I'm thinking 'not for me', but it was beautiful and lush and green. And if I lived in such a clement zone, perhaps I too would give it a try. Another positive.

Alys' coldframe great - anyone could do it. Well explained. Thank you Alys.

    Bird damage - indeed. Useful.

Carol's root cuttings' class - brilliant! I learnt something new. Thank you Carol.

The gourmet garden - looking forward to seeing how it progresses.

Design made easy - ditto above. Although I've seen before how to shape a lawn, I appreciate others may not have, and it was good to see agian. Also like the advice about moving plants at this time. Well done Joe.

Really appreciated the sub-titles containing important messages such as the warnings about dangerous plants etc. Very good.

RHS Cardiff coverage - a bit thin but there nonetheless. And Terry Walton to boot. Production Team you've scored on that one. Well done!

Alys' community garden (and Alys' lovely Jack back again). Loved it. Please keep it up.

At last - plants being given their botanical names - wonderful!

The perennial comparison bed - really looking forward to following this up. Lovely choice of plants so far with the foxgloves and heuchera.

With the hanging baskets 30 min stint I initially flagged. I do wonder how the grass clippings will fare in the long term but look forward to a follow-up. Joe's basket project intially turned me cold, but I admit it was stunning and I can see that many people would like to give this a try. So again, well done.

In all, credit where it's due. This was a very interesting programme to watch. I would imagine it appealed to a very large audience and was very worthwhile viewing IMHO.

    Well done to everyone involved.

I thought it a big improvement. Much more gardening content, more plants named and shown clearly, the competition component and the 30 minute spot merged, the hot/not element shrunk to a quick chat in the shed.

Toby mentioned in passing that the Chusan palm had come from Berryfields so we can't begrudge them re-using it, surely?

There were odd bits I could pick holes in, but it was so much more enjoyable that I'm not going to.

Last night... that large palm. How many of us have large plants like that either to move from one garden to another or to buy afresh? Sorry.. no thanks. Yes, more gardening content, but still designed for those with the attention span of a developmentally-challenged gnat. BG is more of a 'safe pair of hands' feeling and comes across as more down-to-earth.

The disappointment of being a newbie wanting to learn and finding that GW is so bitty.. combined with NO, I STILL DON'T HAVE MY 'FREE' SEEDS!! smiley - steam and quite frankly, the shine is gone. whereas BG is developing my enthusiasm nicely thank you very much.

The Ö÷²¥´óÐã always used to do factsheets for TV programmes like this - I guess that's stopped with the advent of the internet. I would have thought the best thing to try is emailing the gwpottingshed email address and seeing if the production team can send you something.

Although they seem to be the focus of most of our angst, I don't really think it is Toby, Alys, et al, who are to blame for the current state of play on GW. They are just glorified actors being told what to do by the producers - the producers are the people who need to sit up and listen to the disgruntled viewers.

Personally, I don't like the competitiveness amongst the presenters that now seemingly pervades the programme and some of the comments, which some might say is just banter, might be seen as nothing short as bullying or harassment. I do think they all seem to give as good as they get, but why is there a need to constantly make comments between the team, about this is wrong or that's not right, or Toby needing to constantly tell Alys what to do. Certainly does seem to be an odd culture they are promoting. Perhaps Thatcher's children have now grown up to be Thatcher's middle aged gardeners!

Not too impressed - considering that this is supposed to be the Ö÷²¥´óÐã's flagship gardening program.

Several people have mentioned the price that palm would be to buy. I really don't like suggestions for projects which are completely impossible for most gardeners. This out-of-touch-with-reality problem isn't unique to this particular episode - I was watching an old GW replay on UK Gardening recently and Monty was creating a small area which must have used about 40 pot-grown plants, costing around £5 each - nice effect but completely impractical.

Someone above mentioned health and safety - cutting the metal foil - that struck me too - and what about Alys dropping those bricks on that big piece of glass that she "found in a skip". At another point Alys was hammering a stick into the ground using a brick and bare hands - not for me.

I wondered how drainage works in that conical planter.

I'm not keen on the artificial jocular "banter" that occurs between the presenters - they are not professional actors, and it doesn't seem natural, for me.

Alys' advice that the expensive palm must not be planted proud seems contrary to the planting advice on the website of a well known exotic nursery: they say exotics should be planted proud to improve drainage. But I'm not an exotics expert - could be wrong.

For me, the informative aspect of the program seems to have given way to the viewer picking flies in it.

Anyway, lots of Chelsea programming coming up. Let's hope that's a bit more grown up.
