Gardeners World - Then or Now

  Just looking around it seems many of you dislike the show now.
  
  I only started watching it when Monty Don was the host, and I do find this series really good! It seems like its focusing on more simplier techniques for us Novices, and I think its good they have realised we aren't all rich and middle aged, and have included Alice in the hosting team.
  
  However, I have seen some old epiosdes on UKTV Gardens and some do seem good; I really love Geoff Hamiltons Kitchen Garden and I wish it was shown more!

  We caught G.W. by accident tonight, but really enjoyed the programme. When I was young I loved Geoff Hamilton and picked up loads of tips and tricks. I did save money and made the little plant pots using newspaper strips.
  
  Tonight we watched Carol taking root cuttings and can't wait to try that out too, so hoping that G.W will grow on me once again.

  I think the reason why people are complaining on here is down to the fact that the program has been dumb downed that much that it is very flat.
  I have virtually every GW on tape or CD/DVD since I first had a recorder, and every other gardening program. It is so poor now and if you are a beginner some of the advice is quite bad, you only have to read what some of the people say on here.
  They are not being picky it just annoying when you see something that is very wrong.
  As you become more confident you will pick up your own techniques for growing things and having a go is much better than watching any program or reading a book. You don't need to spend a lot of money on plants, seed is cheap and good fun.

  I think the big difference in most of the programme these days is that GH was in the main talking directly to US. There are some sequences in the current production style where Toby talks to us, but most of the time we are bystanders, listeners to contrived conversations between presenters. That is at the heart of the problem.

  I like the new version - it's not perfect, but I think it's fun and entertaining and has a lot of potential to settle in well. I really enjoy the jolly atmosphere and I like the much more flexible approach to the 'rules' of gardening - for instance, the sections where Toby, Alice and Joe are all growing the same veg in different styles and comparing how they turn out. That kind of stuff is really liberating, because you feel that even if you don't do things the 'right' way, there's no harm done in getting out in the garden and having a go.
  
  I do think they've got a bit of work to do on the format though, I was glad to see 'hot or not' seems to be fading into the background this week - that was a waste of time. But I have put the show back as permanent feature on my Sky+ which it wasn't last year.
  
  I'm too young to remember Geoff Hamilton (or his predecessors!) but I used to like the Alan Titchmarsh version of the show. Then although I liked Monty as a person I found Gardeners World with him at the helm got very po-faced and serious, (and whisper it - boring) so I didn't watch that version so much. I think the show also lost something by no longer coming from the presenter's own garden too.
  
  I tried Beechgrove because so many people on here rave about it, but I'm afraid it seemed very old-fashioned to me and bored me to tears, so I gave up on it after two episodes.

  if you like geoff hamilton, then you can buy a DVD collection of his three series, cottage gardens, paradise gardens and the ornamental kitchen garden. Ive been watching paradise gardens today as its been raining cats and dogs outside.
  and i'm totally chilled out now and full of ideas.
