...or is it Builders World. I used to lurve GW but, to be honest, I'm getting sick of it now. Where's the proper gardening that Alan, Geoff and Monty love(d) with a passion? The only bits worth watching are the all too brief interludes with Carol Klein showing us stuff that people will actually want to do themselves. Even my sister, whose idea of gardening is to sit on the patio with a beer saying 'that's a nice plant', says it's not the same without Alan smiley - laugh. My personal favourite is Monty with his lovely voice (despite my user name I'm a girl, by the way!).
It's become childish and more like home improvement telly. I've just watched tonight's programme and found myself becoming crosser and crosser and just need to vent my anger somewhere (look out slugs, I'll be out with the torch tonight and a pair of secateurs later!)
Is it just me? If I need advice now I look on the Garden Clinic and Inspiration boards or ask people at work. Friday evenings are not the same.
There, I've finished and I feel better smiley - smiley

I'm sick of it too now Brucie smiley - sadface
The Ö÷²¥´óÐã have killed off the last decent gardening show on telly. I don't bother watching TV these days, it is all such dumbed down rubbish. I used to enjoy a spot of Gardeners World on a Friday night, but I stopped watching it about a month ago now. I just get too angry at the inane banter. I miss Carol but I can't be bothered to sit through the rest of the car wreck of a show to catch her five minutes. smiley - steam

And to think I used to rush off from work at 5:30 on the dot on Fridays so I could get home and watch GW.

These days, I'd be in the pub catching up on the week's office gossip.

smiley - sadface I guess I'm not on my own then. Alys strikes me as an extremely innovative and talented gardener and is now reduced to showing us how to make a path - what a waste, I wonder if she feels the same?
I realise that others will criticise our whingeing but GW was one of the jewels in the Ö÷²¥´óÐã's crown and has been ruined.
    Brucie.

I don't think building a path is a needless waste of time after all we all have paths in their garden. GH used to show us how to lay slabs and lay patios using old bricks, slabs and odds & ends. However let's have it shown properly. Explain about the wooden edging. Explain that the tamping board should be notched either end to get the mortar at the correct depth. Explain that a sheet of plywood could be laid over the blocks and tamped down either with a wackerplate or a length of timber. Just show us how to do the damned job correctly rather racing onto the next jokey item.

And to go 'off subject' for a second, if I may. GH and many other preseneters liked to lay paving slabs using what he called the five spot method ie five dollops of mortar, then lay the slabs on the spots and tamp down. In our last house I tried this and it was hopeless. The pointing fell right through into the voids below.

Then on Ground Force (that programme doesn't seem so bad now, does it?) Tommy Walsh used a 1:2:3 mixture (cement, builders sand, sharp sand) and laid a nice wet amount down, then laid the slab. I've been using this method for a few years now and it's brilliant, very solid and pointing is a treat.

Anyone remember Barry Bucknell? My dad faced all of our doors with hardboard to modernise the old house. Those were the days.

Ah Barry Bucknell - the DIY instructor who said that you could cut tiles with scissors but then broke every one he tried on live T.V. assuring us all the while that it was possible.

Mean while complaints were received from surrounding residents about the noise caused by the tides of tradesmen working at the house he was supposedly doing-up on his own !

Tommy Walsh was another fine adherant to the five dollop method of slab laying - it's just that his dollops along with the rest of him - were bigger. He also advocated brushing in dry mortar as pointing because the T.V. programmes would never allow sufficient time to do the job properly. Even if you do pack in good pointing it can still come out - any short cut is bad workmanship.

I loved the way that Toby drilled through the old trough so that the drill bit went through into the path - when he could so easily have turned the thing the other way up !

These instances are my main beef with the programmes - I don't object to the formats being changed to hopefully attract a new audience but if one is going to instruct - GET IT RIGHT !
