Hello I presume there is no Gardeners World tonight?

I love this show so much! I always stay home for this. I am so glad we get BBB One & Two here in Holland!

    Any comments?

You might get Ö÷²¥´óÐã 1 and 2 in Holland, but you wont get Gardener's World when Athletics is on!

What a CHEEK! What a NERVE!
Just simply to let the athletics go on and on and ON and never a word about GW.
Why is sport more important than vrtually ANYTHING else on TV??????

I am furious that they have just simply cut it out. Why couldn't they just run everything else late or they could have cut out the Tudors. We only have 1 programme for gardening a week so to cut out that without even a word is just not good enough.

I don’t happen to know anybody with a particular interest in athletics – although I’m sure such folk exist. But somehow I don’t think they are as numerous as football or cricket fans, nor as numerous as the Ö÷²¥´óÐã likes to think. And yet, so far this week Ö÷²¥´óÐã2 has offered them OVER THIRTY TWO HOURS of athletics.

Are these fans so insatiable that they must also rob us more modest viewers of our Friday half-hour of gardening too? Are they so selfish and unreasonable that when their programme overran tonight they could not be satisfied with seeing the remainder recorded and screened after midnight?

Without knowing the exact figures, I’m certain that the number of people in the UK who are passionate about gardening far outweighs those with a love of athletics.

I begin to utterly despair of the Ö÷²¥´óÐã.

hi daff, on another thread they said it would be now shown on Sun at 5.35 (PM I assume although I would not be surprised if it was AM the way the beeb treat GW in preference to sport)
Not sure if it might be on the iplayer after the Ö÷²¥´óÐã Wales showing tomorrow afternoon ? Hope so, Sunday is too long to wait.

Agree someone has to prioritise the programmes being shown but at least they could announce at the time when it will be shown next at <...pm> so we can watch if we wish. The Ö÷²¥´óÐã catch all "of postponed till a later date", even when they do this, you either miss the the changed schedule or it does not occur at all. smiley - grr

The records being broken at the moment in Berlin far exceed anything that Toby can tell us. I am sure once you have seen the programme whenever it is most people will come on this board moaning about it. Ö÷²¥´óÐã does not bother about its viewers when they are off for weeks or the programme is 30 minutes instead of the hour so i certainly do not feel at all bothered that it is off for athletics. In fact i do not care if it is permanently off its so rubbishy now.

The Tudors is a big thing for Ö÷²¥´óÐã2. Pulls in tons of viewers. I'm ashamed to say I watch it and have no idea why. I would say I have a good knowledge of the Tudor history and have no idea why but I can't stop watching it. It probably has something to with it sexing up history.

I went out and recorded it through Sky+ only to come home and find athletics instead smiley - sadface

Whilst I understand that sporting events are important to many people, and that events such as the athletics are infrequent...I do think that it's a shame that the loyal viewers of a popular programme such as GW are treated with such disrespect.

I was seething last night when 8.30 came and went with no sign of my beloved GW....I don't know if any mention was made about the programme being cancelled as I had Ö÷²¥´óÐã2 on with the sound off smiley - biggrin

I can't stand sport...I do not watch it, nobody else in the family watches it either...we're not couch potatoes or anything..we have plenty of hobbies...just find sport tedious and boring. OH watched the mens' Wimbledon final...but I went out!

Presumably the series will be drawing to a close soon, as a demographic we gardeners obviously aren't as important as the millions who watch those dreadful reality programes that both Ö÷²¥´óÐã and ITV seem to churn out.

Yup, they did announce this re-scheduling last night. Nothing's going on as has been suggested. It's just the usual Ö÷²¥´óÐã thing whenever Wimbledon, golf or sport is involved. The first thing to be moved will always be GW.

But let's be honest, with the tremendous amount of criticism on here, nobody's really missed it, have they?

I think the point that many of the posters are trying to make is that they DO like to watch it - and many of us are loyal and longtime viewers but the new format / presenters have not yet been able to find their feet and by canceling and/or moving episodes about the Ö÷²¥´óÐã is making it more difficult for us to take the new format etc. to heart smiley - winkeye

Not so Allionii - the point many of us are making is as Garrigirl (sp?) writes. Most viewers, whilst not thrilled with the new GW:
    - DO think it's worth watching and
    - DO think it is improving and
    - DO look forward to it every Friday evening.

And we are therefore very disappointed when the schedulers either make no attempt at all to air a programme (as in so many weeks this year) or simply remove a scheduled programme at will.

Sorry i cannot agree with any of that. I liked watching GW a few years back when it was a good programme with an interesting format. Now its a few minutes of nothing much then a few minutes of more nothing much. Its tacky rubbish that does not put any of the presenters in a good light and makes them look amateurs which i am sure they are not. Since Carol has just done her bit at her own garden we even see her in a better light without having to play cat and mouse with the others. All these people i am sure are worth better. However if they want to allow themselves to be put down by the program makers thats their choice. I do not think it does much for their own credibility or the viewers watching them.

Hi all. We too were equally disappointed at the last-minute change to the schedules on Friday. In response to your comments, I've spoken to Rosemary Edwards, series producer, about the decision to move GW last Friday and here's what she said:
"The Gardeners' World production team had worked very hard on producing Friday's programme. It was a project that had taken over 18 months to film and many of us had rushed home to watch it. However we know we are not the only programme that has to be rescheduled when faced with a live television event. It happens especially in sport and news events when timings don't always go according to plan. In this case a number of crucial World Championship final track events had been delayed and it was important to ensure those finals were played out live. Everyone can, however, still catch up with last Friday's episode on Iplayer for the next seven days."

Very good of you to get a response from the GW series producer, and for her to take the time to comment.

Just a small point to add which perhaps is worthy of consideration.

Whilst most contributors to the Ö÷²¥´óÐã message boards could indeed catch up on iPlayer if they missed the rescheduled programme, there are many licence payers (five of my gardening neighbours included) who do not have internet access! Please remind those in 'power' that technology is not available to all its viewers!

"...a number of crucial World Championship final track events had been delayed and it was important to ensure those finals were played out live".

Why? Why was it so important that they were "played out live"? Many people are happy to watch recorded football matches. As I said in an earlier posting, Ö÷²¥´óÐã2 offered athletics fans OVER THIRTY TWO HOURS of athletics. Are these fans really so insatiable that they must also rob us more modest viewers of our Friday half-hour of gardening too? Are they so selfish and unreasonable that when their programme overran they could not be satisfied with seeing the remainder recorded and screened later that evening?

Just what is it about sports fans that makes them so demanding, and makes the Ö÷²¥´óÐã cave into their demands so readily?

We are licence payers too, and are not a minority. When was the last time a sporting broadcast was rescheduled because a gardening programme over-ran?

As I also said before, I begin to utterly despair of the Ö÷²¥´óÐã.

Whether we are sports fans or not that is not really the problem here. The athletics was showing top class athletes who had worked consistently to give their best and many records were broken. That may sound very dull but its not a weekly event. Gardeners World has gone steadily down hill for quite a few years now. These boards show how unhappy viewers are with the program. So to blame these World Class athletes is a bit sad in my opinion. Maybe we should be asking why G.W has deteriorated so badly. Why the format is so bad and the content suitable for childrens T.V. On the other hand if thats what the gardener out there wants today they are welcome to it.

We are licence payers too, and are not a minority

^^Unfortunately, we are a minority. The beeb will always go with the majority, because ratings is the business it's in. If they can't compete with the commercial channels in terms of viewing figures they will not exist for long.

If you compare the amount of people who do sport (including dubious ones like darts and snooker!) or who watch sport and compare that to gardeners or parties that watch gardening programs the difference would be vast.

So, who do the beeb pander to in this instance? The minority or majority? Simple business sense really. Shame for us though.

Thought the last GW was very good. I might have actually learnt something! I hope they revisit the cottage again so we can see how that wisteria is looking.

Finally (as I don't post on this subject due to it's contention), I don't suppose anyone of much significance in the Ö÷²¥´óÐã does read these boards. Even if they did, why would they change the format of the show because "angry of Doncaster" moans on an internet forum. Until the viewing figures fall so much they have to address the format, a few moans won't be addressed. It seems that off these boards a lot of people do like GW as it is.

If you really want to make a difference, don't watch. Then the viewing figures go down. Watching on tv then complaining on here will have zero effect.

I get the feed from bbc norn iron, and they had the audacity to show gaelic football on the sunday instead of the climax to the athletics. Who cares? Get the athletics back on, they didn't even show highights of the athletics.

I wandered in during the Sunday GW, and I don't know what it was, the timing, the different day, it didn't 'feel' like a normal run of the mill GW. Anyone else feel the same?

If you were the programme controller at the BEEB and had to choose between live World Championship athletics with finals being decided, or broadcasting a pre-recorded, not date specific programme, then it's a no-brainer.

Even if it had been a regular one hour show, whether we watched it on the Friday night or a day or so later, it isn't as time sensitive as a live, major sports final.

Somewhat on the other hand, I don't mind GW occasionally getting bumped when live events overrun, but I do mind it being off air so much of the year as a matter of course - and it should definitely be repeated in the week anyway.

    THis begs two questions

Why were we being shown a programme (interesting as it might have been) that was pre-recorded, not date specific when there has been so little 'proper' GW so far this year? Is that it? Is GW 'proper' over for the season now or is it just that nobody could be bothered to film an hour in the rain again.

As far as it being a 'no-brainer' to choose live athletics finals over it - what other programmes get shoved out of the way on such a regular basis? It always seems to be GW.

I've read lots of messages on the board about GW being transmitted on different days in other regions because of sport and at different times. Perhaps the Ö÷²¥´óÐã should show GW on Ö÷²¥´óÐã3 instead of constant repeats of Topgear, or move some dreadful sports event to Ö÷²¥´óÐã3. Ö÷²¥´óÐã Controller leave GW alone, on Friday at 8pm, there's a dear.
