With reference to Gardener of the Year. Is that all we are going to see of the candidates, a segment in GW? Surely there will be a programme ( or better still a series of programmes ) devoted to the candidates and the judging process. If not, just a look at their garden and a pot challenge, then a vote - surely the whole idea has been devalued? There is so little gardening on tv that a series of 6 half hour programmes would not come amiss - something to look forward to in the depths of winter.

i agree with you the whole idea has been devalued in the last few years i took part and was in the final in 2001,there were 6 finalist at that time and after reaching the final we had to take part in gardening tests and at the same time build a show garden over a period of 4 days which when you have never done this before is no easy task but we all had fun and got on really well, the gardens all stayed at the birmingham botanic gardens for a year and then they were sold of and i had a wonderful letter from a couple who bid for my garden then took it home and put it in their own garden.i think the reason the whole idea has gone down hill is money it costs the bbc a lot to make this sort of show with people having to stay in hotels and having to feed us as well as the cost of the gardens.

I think Petalina's idea is a good one too. I'd enjoy watching a series of shows featuring a high standard of amatuer gardeners.

it costs the bbc a lot to make this sort of show with people having to stay in hotels and having to feed us as well as the cost of the gardens.

I think you are quite right admeto but I'd rather my portion of the TV licence went towards paying for something like this competition rather than the expense they go to in sending 'Foreign Correspondents' to stand outside the Taj Mahal or on the West Bank just to do a 2 minute piece to camera.

Often these correspondents are duplicated ie.Ö÷²¥´óÐã1,Ö÷²¥´óÐã News 24, Radio 4 Radio 5Live all at the same place, covering the same event. I'd rather watch a proper series of GOTY

I'm a bit perplexed by the cuttings exercise. Both the pelargonium and the hydrangea look green all over, so unless there's some firming material on the hydrangea from which to take semi-ripe cuttings which we haven't seen on camera, then both cutting types are very similar. And I've not propagated hydrangeas myself, but several on-line searches show young green stem cuttings put into a propagator with bottom heat - just as you would for pelagoniums. So what exactly is the different technique being looked for in the competition?

I'd have thought they might have chosen two completely different techniques, such as root cuttings, or hardwood.

And because the judges are all being so very nice about the gardens and the propagation, and not giving us a proper critique - how are we viewers supposed to make an informed choice! The one with the prettiest garden? The one best able to enunciate their visions? The best dressed?

Oh well, what do I know. And who's watching it anyway!

i really agree with you their seams to be no method of judgeing the gardens as we se so little of them.when i took part in the final back in 2001 they made a film of the gardens to show to seprate judges to the ones in the final and they awarded points just from the films without even visiting the gardens and then we had seprate judges for the final when we had to build a show garden these included pippa greenwood, mathew wilson who were wonderful and disscused the whole thing with us the other judge a chap called joe swift did not want to talk to anyone and hid in the corner although the crew said they were having trouble with him, wonder what happened to him!
