I been reading with interest your views on GW and do wish you would all stop moaning about GW. They are doing their best with what is clearly a bad concept.

The fundamental difference between this series and all the others is that in previous gardens like Barnsdale, Barelywood and even Berryfileds they were real and established gardens and in the first two cases they belonged to the main presenter. Therefore one could related to the changes and evolvement of new gardens within.

Greenarce is just that, a green field site an acre in size (one presumes), which they have tried to create into various types of domestic gardens, but on a grand scale such as the greenhouse, raised veg beds, front gardens, etc.

Once they have planted them up it is clear there is very little to do, other than create another garden or revisit to see how the plants are progressing. Whereas in the established gardens of the previous series there more everyday jobs to be done like, pruning an establish apple tree, digging something up that has died, treating decease or bug infestation, things that everyday gardeners have to deal with and want advice on, which is why I think you have all lost interest in the programme.

But what does come across is that, whilst Toby Alys and Joe are all passionate gardeners they are not passionate about this garden. It is sterile, too new and lacks character.

That is why you all prefer the features from Glebe Cottage, Carole is talking about her own garden so the passion is not just about the plants, flowers and gardening, she is sharing her garden which she has taken years to establish and evolve.

If anyone from the Beeb is reading this, you need to go back to the wining formula, of doing GW from a real garden, not a contrived one.

Greenacre has been planted up - but we didn't even see that! I thought the whole idea was to create a garden from scratch - and I was very interested in that - but that concept went by the board in about week two.

Barnsdale was not an established site when it was bought by GH in order to present the then new GW. He gradually transformed sveral muddy, clay acres into a series of themed gardens all planned as though they were a normal back garden.

He did it with wit, humour and humility always showing off the plants and people he worked with and taking most of his audience with him as he moved towards organic and sustainable gardening as he became more convinced about the need to protect habitats and wildlife.

None of this is evident in the current format of GW nor in its main presenter who is slapdash and disrespectful of both plants and fellow presenters as well as being patronising towards his audience. That is why loyal viewers are so cross and upset and why new viewers are literally being led up the garden path with bad and untimely advice.

There is no continuation or progression with this new series. Just like Joes allotment we are told things have been done but we never see it. They buy in plants the garden appears and then its in full bloom or the allotment is full of veg. Any keen garden would know this cannot happen and any new gardener would not see the process needed to get the end result. I am sure they are all keen gardeners and know their subject but they are made to look like puppets having their strings pulled by the program makers and the audience are just clearly sick to death with the whole performance. Why not just have the program from Carols garden at least that is real and she knows her garden. I thought Groundforce was a ridiculous concept but what we have now is far more painful to watch.

Where have you been? - we all worked that out in week two.

Has anyone noticed that groups of plants seem to 'appear' in the background that weren't there in the previous week and we haven't heard mention of when they were planted?

Can you give me a few good reasons why we should!
The Ö÷²¥´óÐã supposedly have professional, well paid executives, engineers etc etc who are more than willing to spend the license fee and I think we should rightly expect an acceptable standard of programme content and frequency. They have done it in the past so where is the accountability, the people falling on their swords whilst at the same time holding their hands up to admit it was their fault?, smiley - smiley, if that's physically possible smiley - biggrin. Why accept a poor compromise when you pay for quality programming?!! smiley - grr Beechgrove Garden can do much better on I am sure a much much smaller budget so it is just getting the right people in the right jobs rather than hangers on who have probably never seen a garden and whizz bang cameramen/directors. I feel better now. smiley - laugh

I'm too much of a control freak - wouldn't trust a gnome (they smile too much). Have to do it myself or closely supervise family members. smiley - biggrin

I agree with Londonplantmad, have the programme from Carol's garden. Carol should have been given the job of presenter in the first place, she has far more passion for gardening that the lukewarm Toby.

Tonight's programme, which has no preview link as at the time of writing, is number 21 of 23 (so 23 will be a festive halloween edition). Then GW disappears for several months, but if we are very very good we might be offered a couple of "speshuls".
Those of us from the early days of the message boards, and indeed those of us from Garden Club days with P Thrower in an unglazed glasshouse in a studio, generally only comment on these boards if we have something positive and constructive to say. This is why we are rarely seen these days.
I have to say the one and only, unique in fact, GW has improved from Garden Club by some form of evolution, or maybe genetic modification. smiley - laugh

Sorry ladyswallow that would mean no more GW for me atal. I can "just" stand hyper Carol in small doses in an insert cotext on GW but as for a full programme no way. Now don't get me wrong I think CK is an experienced gardener who could be a very good presenter. The abrasive thing for me is the ingenuous enthusiasm (hers or directed I do not know), or poor acting, see Monty's thread, which distracts from the subject matter. Toby has his shortcomings and I do wish they had started with the "gardening basics" at Berryfields, especially proper step by step vegetable bed preparation and planting, rather than a new this and a modern that. The programmes owes it to the new and up and coming gardeners to instill a bit of confidence rather than overstretching them on things often not needed or required. Still GW now is better than nothing but with room for improvement IMHO. Where is Joe by the way? that's seems along holiday he is on. smiley - laugh

    Hello Yakram, my dear
An unglazed greenhouse in a studio sounds surreal! - sounds wonderful!
Is there a dvd or something of the very early shows?
    xx
ps I thought Rag, Tag and Bobtail was a wildlife programme for years when I was little, so I might not be the most discerning viewer

    Hello LionR
Garden Club was in black and white, not this new-fangled colour lark and was in a studio, not in a garden. It has moved on, like a Wizard of Oz moment over the rainbow.
My medicine is a wee dram of single malt, neat.
    Hello Nooj dear
Yes, it was surreal in a studio but it was all we had.
Maybe GW is a virtual garden??

For that alone you can have a choice of my favourite medicine too. I have a 15YO Macallan, Caol Ila, a cask strength Clynelish 25YO, cask strength Springbank 21YO,and a Longrow. Make your choice before the nurse gets back.smiley - ok
