I bought some weed control fabric from a DIY supermarket, there were few and questionable directions for its use. How can it stop weeds if placed under the flower beds as recommended? How deep is "under" Is there a right way up? will it let the water through?
    Any input would be welcome
    Thanks

Hopefully your weedcontrol fabric will be the best stuff which is woven polysisal similar to bulk bags only black. It needs to be laid over the surface of your beds AFTER you've taken all big weeds out or before planting if the bed is new. You then have to cover the whole lot in some kind of mulch which holds it down - coarse wood chips, bark or shingle - remember the finer the material the more easy it will be for weeds to colonise!

There is no "this side up" to worry about and aim for 75mm of mulch cover.

enry, as the saying goes "The devil is in the detail". It's sold, as you rightly state, as Weed CONTROL, but then you ask "How can it STOP weeds". The answer is - it doesn't stop them. It does help enormously to control them, and yes,it does allow water through. However, you obviously have to cut holes in it, to plant through - and the weeds are determined little devils. I used it to help with a megga problem I have with bindweed. It comes from a field adjoining our garden, where I had around 20 clematis planted on the other side of the wall. Despite the weed control fabric, last week I gave up the fight and dug all the clematis out. The weeds came through the plant spaces and made their way under the fabric and out of all the edges. The clematis were 'heaven sent' for the bind weed to climb up. smiley - yikes

Hope you have more luck than me with it.

If it isn't Phormisol then I would not bother

I have tried everything else and we now don't use anything but this

It is also really good in tunnels

To reduce work we also plant through it, these are through 2 meter wide
