Having read so many criticisms of the present team who would you bring in to replace- I would keep Toby get -rid of arm waving Carol and Alys with her annoying style-and bring in Sarah Raven and use Joe for bigger outside projects.
    Just an opinion!

A long time ago, before Toby came along, myself and many others, had suggested Matthew Wilson.

There was also an article suggesting Wilson in the Independent:

For whatever reasons, that didn't happen, and we got Toby instead.

I still believe that an in-depth knowledge of horticulture is essential, and that probably means RHS-trained.

Also, the person needs to have presentational skills.

And, as far as the ladies go, male presenters should have something of the Heathcliffe about them (according to the Independent).

And I must also point out that female presenters must look good in wellies. That rules out Carol and Alys. But would include Rachel de Thame.

The RHS churns out dozens of new graduates every year, surely there must be some suitable among them who are looking for a job.

    I don't consider a presenter's looks, (one person's handsome is another person's characterless).

Interesting and knowledgeable style and a warmth of manner and a voice that does not send me to sleep, is what I like.

You know the saying, "You can't please all of the people all of the time", so an interesting variety of visiting experts should give something in every show for most people, whoever the main presenter is.

Given my druthers I would have Dan Pearson.

I used to like Richard Jackson who used to have a gardening programme on Meridian until he sold his soul to QVC.

I would have Harry Hill to sort out the cucumbers and Bill Oddie for the little jobs around the garden

    Chris Beardshaw and Anne Swithinbank
I would go with that, Chris is also a very good designer so we would not need anyone else.
Carol is a must as the most knowledgeable plants woman of them all with some of the head gardeners from RHS gardens doing fill ins.
We could have specific sections from our own board, Giant trowel and Trillium come to mind.
GH made a new project from start to finish each season this could be brought back instead of the start a project then never see it again that we have now.
"Oh well" we can all dream.
    Frank.

GH made a new project from start to finish each season this could be brought back instead of the start a project then never see it again that we have now.

This is the one vital ingredient missing from GW now. GH did it, AT did it (I stopped watching when MD took over), and Beechgrove still do it. I just can't relate to the programme as it is.

I still like Toby, but, as someone else remarked on here recently, he doesn't seem to be on much. I know Carol is extremely knowledgable, but, as one of the millions of 'ordinary' gardeners, I just don't see how knowing what plant is related to what is of any use to me. I heard Carol ask the person she was talking to last week how important this knowledge is, and he said 'very' for things such as cancer cures. Well I would be the last person on earth to knock that, but it's not what I'm looking for in a plant. I've watched this section every week (with a great deal of the 30 minutes being devoted to it), but if I was tested now on any part of it - I would fail miserably. It's not something that I am ever likely to use in my 'ordinary' garden.

I used to love the visits to other gardens, on previous GW programmes (Stephen Lacy I think??), but the few I've seen on the present GW have not really been of much use to me. The 'Prairie Planting' one was a perfect example of one which didn't inspire me at all.

I think these are some of the reasons GW has lost so many viewers.

Hi HTF, I have to disagree about not wanting to know what plants are important for. I love plants and want to know more about them in much greater detail. If you want to know what to plant in your garden, you can read that in the countless number of books on the shelves. Coffee table books, most of them, but to go deeper is wonderful. I have books on botany and specialist plant books but it is lovely to be told it on screen.
So that item does not put me off GW.

And neither does prarie planting. I've seen at very close quarters how it has dramatically transformed the gardens at Trentham (Tom Stuart Smith and Piet Odulf designs). Beautiful. Ryton organic garden, Wisley are two I can recall from memory. Lovely prarie style plantings.

It takes all sorts in this world and it wouldn't do for us to all like the same.

I also like Toby. In fact, I don't dislike any presenters but then I'm easy going and chilled. I'm sure that if Toby was given the whole programme to himself as Geoff was then maybe he would work on a similar style but as it is it isn't his own garden, he has to travel from Devon each week to film and then do other stuff the rest of the time. Geoff didn't do much else and he was on site every day as it was his own garden. I would also imagine that if the likes of Chris Beardshaw had wanted the job, he could have had it but would he want his own garden using, that's if he's got one of any size.

    Hi Sue

I couldn't agree more. If everyone liked the same style of garden then life would be very boring. I went to Trentham last year - and I didn't like what the designers had done to it. But that's because that style of gardening just doesn't appeal to me at all. It's the same thing with home styles - minimalistic versus 'character' (or, as someone on the side of modern/minimal - as I am,) 'character/rustic translates in my mind to 'cluttered'. But I appreciate that a lot of people like that. However, I don't think many ordinary gardeners have either the space or inclination to go for prairie style gardening - but I could be wrong.

I take your point about Toby not being able to spend more time there, but I just can't relate to the garden now on GW. I see shots of the borders and think 'oh, what was that, when was that planted, etc. I always record it, and find myself constantly re-winding it, to try to get a proper picture of the garden -but I'm still no wiser. I've seen large borders filled with flowers, and, unless I've watched previous programmes with too much winesmiley - biggrin) I just don't remember seeing them being planted. I've watched it since it was completely bare, but, because because there doesn't seem to be any follow through with anything, I just can't picture the garden as a whole.

I don't know how much time the people at Beechgrove spend on their garden each week, but they plant things, then go back to them. They show whole areas of the garden, as they walk around, so I can get a proper picture - and consequently feel more involved in what I'm watching. I feel like I've been to Beechgrove, as they make such a good job what they do there.

But, as I said, I do still like Toby smiley - smiley

Tobe honest i think we need a few new faces covering new but much needed garden subjects such as machine servicing, ie mowers, how to service the engine, sharpen the blades,

tool maintainance, ect ect, the cost of having anything done to the above "If your not the sort to know about such service needs can be very very costly.

I would'nt mind what such a person looked like if they could get the message over how to service a basic lawn mower, rotovator, ect.

I would think servicing a mower is a bit like servicing a car-if you dont know what your doing I wouldn,t start and I don't think this is a subject a tv programme would cover.
Anyway back to the original discussion- the people from Gardeners Question Time seem a knowledgable lot - perhaps not faces for tv??

Servicing mowers? Crickey!! No, I'd like to see Matthew Wilson take the lead with Dan Pearson taking us round other gardens. All this if we can't have AT back.

Having started this discussion 3 weeks ago - i didn't expect that.
Monty Don coming back just seems like a backward step and Toby was stabbed in the back-but at the way they trudged off at the end of the last show (with hindsight) the writing was on the wall!
Once again licence payers have paid for a garden-what happens to that?

The garden could be handed over to the many people who have no garden, but who want to grow their own veg.
