I agree. This was a delightful programme with so much packed into it that it seemed longer than its half hour slot.
Can't wait for the next one - and it's a long time since I've said that about a 主播大秀 tv gardening programme! -

I ask for a lot more - for carol to calm down , and to be realistic and honest and tell us who helps her in her large garden , does she get tired ? what does she feel she cant cope with , what does she just leave , does she spend money ? how much does it all cost .
I enjoy her though , despite her exhausting feverishness, and admire the filming of it . -

I did not find Carol over the top in any way, she is full of enthusiasm, if you water that down you will end up with TB in female form - not my idea of a passionate gardener at all. Do you wander sedately round your garden? I don't. I love it and so does Carol. She obviously works hard, no manicures and mascara for this lady in her gardening togs. I am sure she does get tired, don't we all. Yes she has a big garden, many do, and they don't have help. The cost is kept down because she divides, sows and takes cuttings from her own plants, I am sure she buys plants, who among us can resist a bit of HRT? .
Carol is a real gardener, she works hard. And so what if she has help, big gardens keep people like me employed.
Can't wait for next week, thank you beeb for giving Carol this chance. -

I don't think the programme editors did CK any favours. When she was explaining anything in detail it was far too brief, seemingly so that the producers could use more 'moody' long-shots of the garden.
For me this programme was neither fish nor fowl, as if they didn't have confidence to show a programme which wasn't 'accessible' to noobs. -

Those with long memories will know that I have serious reservations about Carol Klein's style of presentation, but on this occasion she provided a splendid half-hour of gardening. This was a programme I could relate to, and it made me feel a little itchy to get out there and make a start (once the snow finally clears). Klein kept the gurgling to a minimum, but retained the enthusiasm and sensible commentary - and this worked well. The tasks she was undertaking, were all the basic tasks that so many of us are facing in the coming weeks, and it was good to see that at last there was a garden on TV that I could relate to. Also full marks to the production team, who managed to produce a programme without blur and whizz, and allowed the viewer to enjoy what was going on. I'm hoping the rest of series is up to the high standard of the first episode.

I thought that Carol Klien's program was great. It was inpirational in a way that Gardeners World has been lacking since it was presented by Alan Tichmarsh and Geof Hamilton. The format apeared natural, not contrived as in GW and Carols enthusiam is infectious, I felt truly motivated. Please can we have more of the same

Agree totally with Ken (there's a first!).
Excellent programme - interesting, informative and great to see a lady who just gets on with things and doesn't preen and fuss when she's gardening. She just gets totally absorbed in the task in hand.
She's a great role model for me and her warmth and love for her subject is plainly evident.
A really good half hour. -

Colin - I can understand your point of view, but does every gardening programme really have to be "accessible" to newbies? There are a large number of intermediate and more experienced gardeners who deserve to have a show they can enjoy too. I think the whole reason Gardeners World has been so poor over the last couple of years has been because the producers were trying too hard to make it "accessible" to newbies with a trail of idiotic attempts to be cool with gnome cams, ice cream vans and radio one DJ's.
Thanks Auntie Beeb for letting Carol do this programme. It was a throughly enjoyable, and her wonderful enthusiasm has left me itching to get out in the garden. -

I agree, I'm inspired to get out in the garden, rain and snow allowing!
It's lovely to see the cats and dogs enjoying the garden. Does anybody know what breed of dog they were? I'm a cat owner, but I wonder how dogs fit in with gardening and how do you stop them trampling on borders and digging plants up etc? In the future I am considering having a dog and would like advice on this. Thanks. -

I like Carol. She is very enthusiastic and shows it. The program was good very relaxing but 30 minutes was far too short. Just as i was getting into all the ideas for spring it was over I am looking forward to the next one. Its great not to have the gimmicks and get down to proper everyday gardening that we all have to deal with. There is nothing like a true plantsperson in their own environment to get you gardening. Even her most avid critics cannot deny she knows her stuff. Give her an hour 主播大秀 we need it and she deserves it. Down to earth gardening without all the expense. A female Geoff what more could we ask for.

Well1 for it to be shown on 主播大秀 Wales for a start! on the night that has always been traditionally GW night.
We were served Rugby, hugely annoying! I expect it will be buried in the afternoon schedules over the weekend,
I'm sure that out of all those in Wales who pay the Licence Fee there are more gardening enthusiasts than Rugby fans, and probably most of them are out in the Pubs. (but obviously that doesn't count at 主播大秀 Wales)
I was really looking forward to it........ -

Drafted a comment Ken and found that you had said everything, including the gurgling gush being just about bearable!!!, already. Augers well for the rest of the series but looks if it going to be 100% flowers et al as opposed to growing to eat but a pleasant enough 30 minutes.
Slap on the back for the production team as well, reasonable continuity, technology when required rather than for the sake of it and reasonable direction.
I do wish Carol would wear gloves for some of her jobs and where were the HSE when she was removing the clematis??? needed a sky hook to me

I enjoyed this first episode immensly.
Carol is the master of propagation. Although I knew the theory - by practical demonstration, Carol showed me how propagate snowdrops I've never trtied itby 鈥榮caling鈥.
Please don鈥檛 complain about Carol being animated鈥.it鈥檚 a bit like asking Victor Meldrew not to moan! -

I found it a very absorbing and very much enjoyed seeing the heavy tasks actually being done on camera rather than the "here's one an invisible gnome produced earlier " approach of recent GWs.
I don't want HSE hovering about the ladder or anywhere else. She got her husband to hold it which is what normal people do. I knew Huldine was vigorous but not that it could get quite that big if left. I shall have to watch mine.
Apart from wanting to see mor ebout how she stored/divided/potted up all those perennials she dug up before they dried out or got frosted again the only problem I have with it all is that I can't expect to get out and do anything useful in my garden for at least 2 months and probably 3 as winter goes on a lot longer here than in Devon. If the rest of this series is as good I shall be fit to burst by then. -

Carol's enthusiasm is like Roy Lancaster's, based on absolute love for plants. I find it infectious in both cases and would not want Carol to tone it down.
Looking forward to seeing the programme on replay this afternoon.

Hi Cleverelliejo - I agree phoned my mum in NI to tell her CK was on last night and she had rugby too with no idea when it would be shown.She has just phoned me today to say she has found out - using her gardening 'digging' skills that it is on tonight in NI at 7pm. But is it the same in Wales?Very frustrating!!

Re the mascara, manicure comments, you should see how she fantastic looks at Chelsea, fabulous clothes and perfect make-up, albeit heavy for broadcasting purposes. And did you not see that lovely blue dress she was wearing on Breakfast last week coupled with grey high heels? Have not seen the nails to be honest though. I always wear make-up no matter how tatty my gardening clothes are.
Should start another thread on who wears make-up while gardening?!

We all of us get enthusiastic when describing something we love and in Carol's case are very knowledgible about.
Her garden is quite mangeable when you consider that like my Father did, she spends probably every available hour working in it.
If she does have the odd artisan gardener going in much like the Hedge Layer last night then well and good for the local economy, I use a local man when I need heavy work doing and why not?
We must also remember that hours of camera work went in to it over a very long period of time so well done the producer who had to cut it all down to 30 minutes of very interesting programme in which I like others learned something.
Carol is superb in both her presentation and the way she explains the methods used, as for gloves, I get all the things out to start work and within minutes the gloves have come off in more ways than one. I hope she has kept up with her Tetanus shots!
Great programme more of its like please and more of Carol I love her enthusiasm for all things gardening.

I think you missed the point I was making Obelixx, although somewhat tongue in cheek I must confess
, its just that where Carol is doing work in an employed situation she is subject to the requisite safety rules and regulations like the rest of us at work. What we all do in the "real" world is neither here no there so with CK perched atop an apparently unsecured ladder on unstable ground, despite held by her husband, did look a little unsafe hence my quip about the HSE!!!!. I was not advocating a HSE intervention, God forbid, just a little surprised at the set up.
Anyway quite enjoyable IMHO-Happy New Year

I've given very careful consideration to your kindly advice, Joe, but have decided to disregard it. Looking through this thread, it's apparent that few gardening programmes have received such initial approval from the majority of 'boarders' - and not one person complained that there wasn't enough chortling going on. Yet CK still effortlessly managed to convey her passion without it. Who knows - perhaps someone does take note of consistent comments on this Board over a prolonged period. We'll soon find out as the series unfolds. Anyway Joe, no doubt we'll catch up soon. -

Your comments about hours worth of filming for a 30min programme just amplify the comments made by many here that the programme really ought to have been 60mins long and there are possibly (certainly?) many great moments of filming lying on the cutting room floor. Pity.

I was determined not to miss it and hunted it down in the the TV Mag. 7pm here in Wales.
Enjoyed it very much.
She certainly has a head for heights!! I get vertigo standing on a tiny 2 rung kitchen steps !!
My OH does a first class job with the really long (cheap) extending loppers that we bought several yrs ago in Lidl's. one of our best buys!

Buying a few bits & bobs in my local fruit 'n veg shop today, I overheard a lady in the queue in front of me remark to the lady on the cash-out till 'watching Carol Klein on TV last night made me feel like getting out into my garden'....having this affect on viewers is surely the mark of brilliant presenter.

I did just that this afternoon. Donned my wellies, tied a long shaggy scarf around my neck, grabbed the clippers and muck bucket and cleared the winter debris. Then I sat on the garden seat, cup of tea in hand and enjoyed the winter sunshine. Thanks Carol. -

Carol was, as always, simply magnificent.
I love her enthusiasm, her cheerful 鈥済iggling鈥, her emphatic intonations, her lack of solipsism. I have an immeasurable admiration for her knowledge of gardening matters and her evident thirst to learn even more about it from all kinds of experts.
To me, she is God鈥檚 gift to the 主播大秀, to GW and to those, like me, who need inspiration in matters horticultural!
I do wish she could be on TV every week. She inspires and cheers me up! -

Lowena,
It could be possible if those six years and the four or five after were not burnt into my brain by the experience.
Books have been written about Saints and if you had the fun and joy of a gentle caring father who did indeed almost kill himself to make sure we ate and lived well in a deadly and hard time I think any one would extol his virtues.
Remember Lowena, the war was closed down by all for 55 or more years and it was the 主播大秀 who opened the floodgates in 2000. They got thousands of stories that would have died with us all and those stories are now being told on almost a daily basis by all the TV companies.
War is not a glorious medal opportunity, it is hard and horrible for all concerned and if the odd reminder stops people from doing it again then good, I wished it had stopped them during the last thirty years of killing but it has not, more is the pity.
Gardening was shown to me as a way of working off stress by a man who never showed anger and now I applaud Carol who it appears to me is out of the same mold, long may it be so.
Of course you do not have to read my posts???

I do hope the David K, Lowena and Palaisglide apparently abrasive,and sometimes hurtful, interactions above are not going to be typical of an otherwise "friendly" and useful board.
Am I missing the tongue in cheek interchanges or is there some real vitriol which surely could be called to a truce for 2011.
To avoid misunderstandings, which are easily misconstrued from a narrative format, could we perhaps begin a "wind up" comment "for effect" with a so that it is not taken too seriously and which could perhaps otherwise can easily cause offense to both intended recipient and other readers. -

Well what can I say. This was a lovely thread, lets hope it gets back to the right theme, Carol Kline & her new programme. I really don't think there is any need to pick faults in people, (posters & presenters) the way they talk, dress,make mistakes in their grammar or in this case mention something or someone very dear to them. What is the harm in doing so. There are a few 主播大秀 posters who seem expert at fault finding.

Just watched the programme - I really admire that woman!
I admit to being a bit daunted by evertything that needs doing at this time of year,
but then again my greenhouse is an ex greenhouse and I haven't got a lovely shed thing.
And everytime I step outdoors it snows on me
I do share that enthusiasm for compost .
Something so good and sweet smelling that comes from nothing at all
I suspect all mine is froxen at the moment - but can't wait to go and have a poke about in it. -

It's not really intended to be kindly advice, Ken. I, and probably many others, find offhand and quite sleazy comments about people's personalities quite objectionable. Carol, like the rest of us, is what she is. She evidently isn't cruel to dogs, especially Lakeland terriers, is knowledgeable and entertaining, is making an honest living, and talks with a different accent and has different mannerisms from other folks.
We don't have the pleasure of criticising your accent, your your dress sense and your articulation of vowels, so you're in the happy position of being able to be misanthropic without restraint. As they say, get over yourself. -

Absolutely loved the programme, thank you Beeb, and thankyou Carol. I was hospital visiting on the night, but caught up with it yesterday afternoon (while the rest of the family were having the unfortunate experience of watching Barnet thrash Bradford City 3-0). As soon as the programme finished, I stepped out into my ice-sodden front garden, did a little nudging with my boot, and discovered that yes, I do have some hellebore flowers underneath the brown soggy mess! Hurrah! Thanks, Carol, for reminding me that there are already signs of life out there.

Aw diddums - poor Joe. You're obviously feeling the pain on behalf of everyone I seem to have offended down the years. Not sure about the 'sleazy' bit though - that doesn't sound a bit like me.
There's a delicious irony in this criticism following on from the first time I've been able to post a wholly positive comment for ages. However, let me see if I've got this right - since I'm in the happy position 'of being able to be misanthropic without restraint', I mustn't criticise anyone who appears on a gardening programme. Does the 主播大秀 know that we're turning this into a 'praise only' board?

The reason for this of course, is the fact that I recognise my limitations (unlike some presenters), and accept that I wouldn't 'cut the mustard' on TV. However, being Scottish, the accent is first class, the dress sense immaculate, and the vowels slaughtered.

They may well say it, but I'm afraid I don't really understand it. I suspect it's not flattering - but since I now know you don't approve of offensive comments, I'll have to ponder it a bit further. -

I really enjoyed this programme - I must whizz out and take the old leaves off my hellebores! Carol's looked so much better with all the old foliage removed and mine do look a bit carp at the moment.
Lovely scenery, lovely dogs, lovely plants and views of the gardens - loved it! -

Hi Tulip! I agree with what you say, having seen Carol at various gardening things she does indeed 'scrub up well'. I do wear mascara while I am gardening as I am scared my customers might think I died in the night withput any! .
