Is anyone else watching the Horticultural Channel on every other Sunday? It's on Sky channel 166 at 9am and today's programme was really enjoyable!

Saw the one two weeks ago and thought it a bit pedestrian with on or two of the presenters but otherwise interesting and enjoyable. Haven't seen tis week's yet as I've been busy gardening and dancing - not both at once.

Watched both shows so far on You Tube. Very good. Not all to taste, not interested in chickens or the cooking bit, but the rest OK.

Please remember that this is a low budget production with non professional presenters, so cant be compared equally to GW or Beechgrove. I think considering the presenters are not professional presenters ots done very well and has its own appeal for that alone. They are doing it for the love of gardening not for money.

Don't forget to tune in Sunday morning on Sky 166 or Freeview 402 at 9.00am. and post your thoughts. I think the producer and team are doing a cracking job with this programme and deserve all the support we can give them

Watched it last night as its on at 9pm after GW. Quite a lot of stuff on "grow your own", which didn't really have any relevance to me, but enjoyable enough as it was very practical and hands on and actually doing some real work rather than just talking about it or expressing how wonderful everything is. Oh, and no Box Hedges! smiley - smiley

My god for the first time EVER!! I have watched a gardening programme that lives in the same world as me,why C4 or C5 cant copy this basic real world garden format I will never know.

The Ö÷²¥´óÐã toffs should watch this and look behind the women doing the pumpkin potting up they will see normal houses and flats behind her that pay 85% of the licence fee and are totaly ignored in the current GW output.

Great little programme that is done by proper real UK gardeners...

    Hi PPP,

That's what I thought when I started watching the Hoticultural Channel programmes. It connects with the real gardening enthusiasts and is as enjoyable as listening to a good talk from a speaker to the gardening club, combined with the good honest, down-to-earth advice you'd get from fellow allotmenteers!! Love it!!

Hello Everyone, I am Sean - the Producer of The Horticultural Channel. Many thanks for all your kind words. I am a gardener and TV person. I've been gardening since I was 12 and have work in TV since I was 18. I have been trying to get this type of programme onto the main channel but have always received the same reply: "It's too niche."

I still think this programme would work well on Ö÷²¥´óÐã during late afternoon, hopefully someone will read this and contact me.

In responce to Pumpkin_Patch_Paul. We don't want C4 or C5 to copy our programme but we are open for those, or any, broadcaster to contact us. My research for the programme has taken many years and I have always felt that 'my' programme would hit the spot with normal - down to earth gardeners.

There is so much I would like to include in the series that we could produce a regular weekly gardening show. I feel there is nothing on TV at the moment like our show and the main broadcasters are completely missing out on such a rich, and large, audience of everyday gardeners.

If Ö÷²¥´óÐã Commissioning are taking note, you can contact me - my email is on my website just search for The Horticultural Channel. I look forward to hearing from you!

Congratulations on your excellent production. Many members of this message board have been on their bended knees, begging the Ö÷²¥´óÐã for a programme like yours.

You will be pleased to know that I've spread the word on two other forums, the response has been very positive and many have subscribed.

Quite right Sean "copy"was a bad choice, though I thought you would have been contracted up with that excellent programme, why C4 or C5 have not taken you on is a mystery to me,what have they got to loose....

As for the Ö÷²¥´óÐã well when have they ever caterd for the working class council dwelling folk of this country......

What as always puzzeld me is the Ö÷²¥´óÐã3 and Ö÷²¥´óÐã4 will repeat endless garbage constantly on a loop but wont give a wonderfull programme like yours a weekly slot...Its all very odd.

Anyway best of luck with the show I certainley will be following it...

    Regards PPP.

Sean- i had a look at your web site and one of your main four presenters is a liberal democrat councillor in west gateshead in tuyne and wear. on his web site, you can read his views supporting a range of government cuts and supporting the trident programme. I don't think that this should rreally be advertised or linked on a Ö÷²¥´óÐã web site- can the mnoderators look into this please?

Lets just suipport the puiblicly funded and publicly responsible tax payers Ö÷²¥´óÐã and not let their forums be used to promote party politics.

Joey - We don't have a link on our website to any party political websites. Like any other TV show all our presenters are entitled to have employment outside of the TV show. We have never included in the show any political views from any political party and would never do so.

It is the way ahead for such programmes to be presented online, on catch up, or URL video ,at time of choice.

I am glad I can now watch some learning about horticulture when i want, and need to.

Thanx to the Beeb gardeners MB I am growing from seeds in the tray and from the packet for the first time, although a competent gardener in other ways for many years.

I have only ever cast seed and never planted in pots to bring them on before and i am finding the Laborious chore quite enjoyable.

Lupins, Echinacea, Hosta, coriander.... and so on all from the mini-prop and miniGH.

Sorry that you lost backing of this excellent real world gardening show, channel four and five are you blind a sure bet with very little to lose.

I suppose the Ö÷²¥´óÐã will spend are cash on programmes like "somebody snogging somebody ect" on Ö÷²¥´óÐã 3 as well as all the other rubbish.

Hi sean, i k now, i've had a look. but it does say he's a councillor in west gateshead so i had a look at that and thats where i read about his views. it doesn't have to be a web link to get someone to look at something does it? if it said on a web page that a dragon had eaten four camels in glossop, i'd google it, reagrdless of a link. and i'd be upset at the mis-truth, as i can't stand camels amnd i'd like to see them eaten by dragons.

the liberal councillors web site is a mixture of what i find quite extreme views and then lots of examples from your tv programme. i don't think the bbc, which is a publ;icly funded impartial broadcaster, should have anything to do with your channel.

i still think the bbc gardening coverage is excellent, the presnters are either excellent presenters, excellent gardeners or a mixture of both.

    keep it up bbc.

Hi pumpkin patch, the bbc give us these forums and everything else for the one off licence fee- thats great if you ask me- i don't want pay-for-view rubbish. i thi nk we should be delighted with what we have, enjoy the excellent quality [prgrammes that are on offer and the ones we don't like, turn off and do something else. snoggathons and lowest common denomonator stuff will always be xchased aftrer by the channels that need the high ratings for advertisers. thats why the bbc is so good

ok, but if it is funded by advertising, then the lowest common denominator will rule- thts why i just wish people would enjoy the bbc output for what it is; catering for all withjout putting a big golden "M" at the start and at regular intervals right through.

anyone remember the channel 5 show with the australian woman in a bikini sponging down the jcb at the end? that the way all commercial programming will go.

and in response to the suggestion that i was a bbc programmer, IF i was, then that australian woman off channel 5 would have been chased round the maze at hampton court. by a dragon. imagine the ratings...

I really don't agree clearance dailky. when i look at what the bbc has to offer and what the other channels have to offer, the bbc always gives the best quality programmes. the gardening provision is excellent and we should be glad that we have it. i think it is sufficient for all amateur gardeners to get more from their gardening.

if anyone wants to learn more (or as some peopel on the board like to say, provide programmes for more experienced gardeners) then i think they are barking up the wrong tree. If people wnat to learn and develop then read a book, go to a lecture or do a class. why expect the bbc to provide you a course on advanced taxonomy or genetics? get your finger out and find ot out for yourself.

i don't think anyone wanting to be a quality chef or gardener should rely on TV programmes to learn their trade anymore than someone wanting to be a mental health consellor should watch and learn from the jeremy kyle show or a brain surgeon should learn from casualty. Or an aspiring reggae musician should learn from rastamouse. the bbc just provides GREAT programmes with GREAT presenters. Thats all.
