There's a lot of discussion about Monty's GW 2011 not being very good and losing viewers.

Well, I would like to iterate the official BARB UK viewing figures (shown in "millions")published.

Critics may find that year-on-year the viewers - us - have not abandoned the programme, perhaps.

As a benchmark, in the far distant past, April/May 2001, the programme presented by Alan Titchmarsh was watched by 4.16 million viewers.

    13.03.2011 - 2.51
    20.03.2011 - 2.05
    27.03.2011 - 2.27 (Buckland 2010 series - 1.90)
    03.04.2011 - 2.18 (Buckland 2010 series - 2.00)
    10.04.2011 - 2.32 (Buckland 2010 series - 2.14)
    17.04.2011 - 1.98 (Buckland 2010 series - 2.11)
    24.04.2011 - 2.13 (Buckland 2010 series - 2.06)
    (break)
    08.05.2011 - 1.91 (Buckland 2010 series - 1.65)
    15.05.2011 - 2.27 (Buckland 2010 series - 2.09)

That makes interesting reading - thank you for posting it.
Great to see in black and white proof that viewers are happier this year than they were in 2010.

I think your use of the term 'benchmark' inappropriate in this context. You can only compare things that are comparable. To compare 2001 with 2011 is a bit like comparing a horse and cart with one of those people transporters, fully air-conditioned and with a film screen for every passenger. In 2001 the television was everything because there was nothing else - today in 2011 television has to fight for its place in the media world.

Well done MD for increasing the viewing figures!

    Thanks for the positive reply.

I do take your pertinent point about the use of the "benchmark" term. The 2011 viewer figures do include all "timeshifted" viewing/recordings (i.e. viewers who have recorded it for viewing later due to conflicting interests).

Personally, we record the programme to watch it later (Saturday mornings) as we have things to do.

Yes, as you said, well done to MD (and the GW production team) in increasing viewers.

It is interesting that AT's ITV gardening show is due in the first week of June - it's titled LOVE YOUR GARDEN - and should "bump-up" interest in gardening in general and the Ö÷²¥´óÐã's GW.

Oh, I hope my previous post was not taken as a negative comment on AT.
That was not intended at all - AT is a very popular TV gardener and I'm sure his new programme will have very good audience ratings. I know I'll certainly be watching. Thanks for flagging it up

You shouldn't take the 'opinions' of a few perpetual moaners and sneerers as representing anything like a serious viewpoint.

There were some newspaper articles, last Spring (2010), which suggested that it was the 'new-style' presentation of the program, with Toby Buckland, that had been responsible for the decline in the popularity of the program, especially amongst 'serious' gardeners.

    Example:

As of last Spring (2010) there was change of policy, away from the gimmicky dumbed-down presentation, and trying to re-focus on 'core-values'. Toby was kept on as presenter, but in the minds of some viewers Toby continued to be identifed with dumbed-down presentation.

Personally, I just gave up watching under TB, the program was so silly at times. It's very easy for programs to alienate viewers, it's more difficult and takes time to rebuild.

The viewing fgures could simply be down to the bad winter and 2010s bad wet spring/early summer, Winter because so many plants died and people want to colour up their garden because of the wnter gloom and replace plants....

The hot dry weather as also encouraged more people into the garden which then encourages more garden TV viewing.

Personaly I prefferd Greenacres rather then Montys dull garden though I think Monty is a good presenter but so is Toby.

It does seem odd that Aly's seems to have bore the brunt of the axeing of Greenacres she seems very popular amongst most of the forum and TV viewers, personaly apart from her swimming activites I miss seeing her and Toby.

Figures dont lie- but why is everyone so hung-up about who presents the programme as this is the reason why there seem to be more viewers?- could it be we are in tough economic times and more people are just looking for ideas to improve the use of their gardens?
Whenever these discussions start it is always the same argument "I don't like Monty, I preferred Toby is is not like the old days etc.etc."- the programme is what it is and if you don't like it that's fine and we are all allowed our opinons but it is getting repetitive and boring.

I have been reading some of these threads on GW and its presenters now and I just want to say that I think that in the UK you are "spoilt" with all kinds of wonderful programs on gardening and anything related to that. I'm in Holland and overhere a lot of gardeners watch GW as much as they can, just because of the expert advice.
We do not have anything like that at all, our neighbourly countries don't have them and whenever there is a decent program it does'nt get enough viewers to continue. We do have a good horticultural society (groei en bloei) with a very good magazine, but for good gardening programs we have to watch the Ö÷²¥´óÐã.
What hinders me is that I cannot watch the programs back that I missed since we're overseas.
I do understand because we don't pay for a licence in the UK but I've found myself swearing ( sorry) whenever I missed GW and the others we are able to watch.

With viewer figures holding virtually the same, was the expense of "change" worth it?
Have the Buckland viewers vanished onyl to be replaced by Don viewers, or is the audience happy to have had either & just love the the GARDENERS' WORLD programme for its content rather than it presentation?

Are Ö÷²¥´óÐã Executives too eager to listen to the "cattering classes"?

Having read through this thread, and the BARB figures, I can't work out why people are saying that GW 2011 is watched by significantly more viewers than Toby in 2010. There is no *significant* increase in viewing figures, and in two cases, 2010 had more or the same as 2011.

BTW, what has happened to Greenacre, and what has happened about the enormous investment the Ö÷²¥´óÐã made in creating it? It seems daft that they dumped a site with such huge potential; I think we only saw a small part of it developed?

Interesting, especially if the majority of GW viewers watched LYG and switched over to Ö÷²¥´óÐã2 at 20:30. This would mean that approx only 1 million "new" gardening viewers were attracted to Alan. For ITV1 this would be disappointing?

ITV1 will always get higher viewing figures than Ö÷²¥´óÐã2 regardless of what is on. Similarly Ö÷²¥´óÐã1 always gets higher viewing figures than Ö÷²¥´óÐã2. This year's Chelsea flower show got 4.1million viewers on one of the days on Ö÷²¥´óÐã1, but when it switched to Ö÷²¥´óÐã2 immediately after for a further 1 hour's coverage, the numbers dropped. It's very odd that people seem to pick channels rather than programmes, but that's folks for you!

It's interesting to see that the 2011 figures differ very little from 2010 until GW clashed with the Friday night England games during the World Cup.

It's good to see that far from LYG adversely affecting GW, Monty appears appears to be inheriting viewers from Alan's programme who are switching to carry on watching gardening.

Does this mean the Ö÷²¥´óÐã will finally start making more gardening programmes?

It does seem odd that Aly's seems to have bore the brunt of the axeing of Greenacres she seems very popular amongst most of the forum and TV viewers, personaly apart from her swimming activites I miss seeing her and Toby.

I agree. I'm really missing the team from last year. It was seeing Alys and Toby in Gardener's world that encouraged me [as a young professional in my early thirties] and many, many of my friends to become gardeners and apply for allotments or land share.

I feel I am speaking for all my peers who are new to gardening...
After gardeners' world 2010 we all ventured into garden centres, many of us for the first time, and spent our salaries on tools, plants and seeds. Quite a number of us managed to get allotments or land and have enjoyed spending the winter digging up our land and planning for the new growing season. We were all disappointed to find the team of presenters that encouraged us so much to pick up [and buy] our spades are not there to support us. Monty is good and very knowledgeable but he doesn't have the passion and enthusiasm we saw with the team at Greenacre. Where we expecting to be enthused further by the team this year but are now deflated by the new focus for the programme. It seems such a backwards step and many of us have just been turning off.

I watched Gardener's world with my parents for years and dipped in and out through my twenties but it was Toby and Alys that grabbed my attention and made me want to plant some roses and grow celeriac!

I like Monty and what he brings but the team needs to be more dynamic and Alys and Toby would bring that back smiley - smiley

Monty is doing a sterling job and his return in HIS garden has brought back an updated but still traditional feel, to GW. Love his passion and genuine conern for all things natural. How wonderful it is to be in someone's garden instead of one in a field, that never felt loved and with the same old topics. Best thing from the last series was Alice..... but now carol Klein is the icing on the cake.......marvellous

I am not surprised that LYG has dipped as its format is dull - more like a lifestyle show with Ground Force On A Budget.
