  William Morris must have copied/been inspired by Indian designs.
  As a person of Indian origin when I first came across William Morris's, all I could think was of the Indian patterns I had grown up with!
  I think Morris got Inspired by things Indian and maybe even appropriated them, Indian restaurents brought the designs directly.

  Morris was interested not only in Indian design patterns, but also in Indian production techniques, because these textiles were difficult to manufacture.

  "Dissatisfaction with chemical dyes led William Morris to experiment with natural dyes whose use with wood block is an age-old craft in most parts of India. Indian palampores (painted cotton hangings) were a particular inspiration to him for their brilliant colors."
  
  Morris was also inspired by Islamic art in general (for example, Persian textiles) which was coming to Britain from the Near East.

  Your observation is correct - what you are seeing in Morris is a Mughal influence. Morris was most interested in Persian textiles, and particularly Persian carpets, and the Indian 'chintzes' that then appeared in his own textiles and wall paper designs.
  Morris is part of the enormous influence of Islamic arts on British visual culture and design that isn't as well known as the influence of Japanese art on western art.
