Not much to choose, I didn't think.

The Monty Don show v the (I’ve been commercialised) Alan Titchmarsh show.....both pretty mediocre IMHO

Btw, because both programmes clashed, I recorded 'Love your garden'. It’s surprising to realise when you are able to fast forward the ads, just how little watchable content there is.

The show that I chose to watch live was GW, intending to have a peek at LYG later on iTVplayer ( ). However, ITV delay posting their programs, so it's not yet available to view.

I did notice on the ITV webpage that LYG only has an actual duration of 21 minutes. 9 minutes of the program are adverts - before, during, and after.

I was at the checkout in my local grocery store this week, and noticed AT's smug grin on the cover of a new DVD - him reminiscing about his childhood.

He's well and truly onto anything to make money.

The GW in the garden bit worked for me but when it moved to the show lost all interest- the stagey bits in the what used to be"the plant swap " were cringy and then the usual rachel and joe bits in the show gardens-they just don't do it for me.
Cant let the "grass garden" go without a comment-it would be hard to find anything more poncy and designerish ( is this a word?)- grass with grass pillars and a grass hole in the ground- I 'm off now to buy turf and a digger-how that related to any garden is beyond me - and it wins a gold medal!!
Love you Garden- ok but nothing special- take it or leave it at present.
Just watched "Get up and Grow" from bbc/northern ireland-have got over my earlier prejudice about cost and who pays for the makeover - is quite an entertaining 30 mins and Chris Beardshaw ,as others have said, is always a passionate presenter and his knowledge and enthusiasm comes over rather well in this programme.

Both of last night's programmes were mediocre I thought.
Alan Titchmarsh wants to make sure he doesn't morph into a characature of himself, and Monty Don needs to actually do some work and get his hands dirty.
GW Live bits ok. Watching the Longacres bits is like watching paint dry........get on and do something with it man!!!! There is no attempt at all to connect the viewer to the garden or to the tasks which need doing ( it'll be winter and he won't have achieved anything smiley - sadface )

I agree with the main thrust of the postings so far. I really enjoyed the contribution of Monty Don from his garden, but the 'Show' part of the programme didn't really excite me. I also thought the plant swap element was embarrassingly lame, and the 'green garden' was just a disaster (unless of course you're called Joe or Rachel). Incidentally, my wife took me aback by declaring "I quite like Rachel" out of nowhere. I felt betrayed.

'Love Your Garden' is a strange programme. It's watchable without being compelling. I wouldn't cry if I missed it. It's hard not to like Titchmarsh, though I really do think he can hardly keep playing the 'housewife's favourite' card much longer. I took little notice of the 'chef' segment, as there are just so many of these hand-flapping cooks on our screens these days - but I suppose it provides a bit of balance to the wildlife woman (who spends a fair bit of her segment keeping the hair out of her eyes).

Gardeners' World is under no threat from LYG. In fact, it's more under threat by it's absence from our screens over the next couple of weeks. ITV must be smiling.

That's a bit harsh, Lowena. He does wheel his wheelbarrow with some aplomb.....strains of Sweet Molly Malone whirling around my head now.

I did spot a bit of unfinished business at Longthingie. The closing shot of last week, MD was wheeling a hedge-cutter (or was it a chainsaw?) at those dratted box hedges, after explaining he was going to cut them back further, to encourage new growth from the base.
Alas, last night, there they were, looking sad as ever…..I think he should be thinking in terms of a comb-over.

I also really enjoyed the part of GW from MD's garden. I get the impression MD is transformed - he seemed happier and more relaxed than ever and he passes this on to the viewer (IMO). I could easily watch him garden for hours!

GWLive - the four-way dialogue - atrocious. Plastic.
After that I just fast forwarded through those bits and stuck to what GW is good at - being in a garden.

I had to grin to myself when I glimpsed those hedges.....I think I'd be tempted to spray paint them if I were him!!
I just wish he'd show some urgency and actually DO something major. If he had a "to do" list, he would never be able to tick anything off!!!

I think MD is great! I really felt that I wouldn't take to the overwhelming glory of Longmeadows - despite MD saying they were in poverty when they took it over, and I know he has worked very hard to bring it to it's present state...I can't help but think about all the money that it represents.....but....I have really enjoyed all the filming in the garden....I also switched off during bits of the GL thingie...how many more ways do we need to be told to spend our money!
Carol is Queen as far as I am concerned and is really where it's at, re planting, dividing, seeds etc ...Maybe this is why the powers that be don't like her 'cos she is always banging on about not spending money and doing it yourself.....
The Alan T show is all spend spend spend, like some glossy magazine in moving images..........Yawn...

Hello - I can't deny that the "watchable" part of the programme was somewhat short, to say the least - but, and it's a bit "but" - I really do think it's a mistake to assume that the presenter has much control over what actually gets to the TV screen in the end. From what I've seen of filming for TV programmes (not much, but enough to give me an inkling of what goes on) there's a whole lot of footage which ends up on what used to be called "the cutting-room floor".

As far as AT doing anything to make money - well, wouldn't most people, provided it wasn't illegal/immoral etc etc? Wouldn't you, if given the chance?

I think there's room for both programmes, but it's a pity they clash, time-wise, as some people don't have the facilities to record or watch on i-player. I guess it's all a part of the TV ratings war between the main channels. Surprise surprise!

I come back aboard for one reason only, to give credit where it is due.
Having been at times quite outspoken about Monty and his gardening maner I did say early this year let us see what he does with Gardeners World before further criticising his style.
" The Lad did good" from the first programme it was a not to be missed time for me and put me in mind of the programmes I enjoyed before the Ö÷²¥´óÐã decided to go trendy.
He is in his own place and we all kmow that is a comfortable place to be it certainly shows with Monty, love the dog by the way.
As to getting some work done as one comment on here, a close up of his hands showed me a gardeners hands, roughened, not quite clean and a bit gnarled, the lad works although to present a gardening programme you have to please most of the people some of the time so jumping from job to job is an essential part of presenting.
I have always loved Carol, and learned a lot from her old as I am, Rachael is nice to look at, Joe? well the programme would not die without him but that is only my opinion, others may differ.
Friday I had the choice of AT to me a gardening icon or Monty and Monty won, I did not even hesitate.
Well done Monty and may you be with us for many programmes to be and do bring the dog please.
    Frank.

< despite MD saying they were in poverty when they took it over >

Sorry, a house (suitable for renovation) with 2 acres of ground in a rural location, doesn't equate to 'poverty' in my opinion.

But thar you go! Could be the sceptic coming out in me again.

Surely this is neither here nor there (and neither do I consider it to be any of my business, nor that of anyone else apart from Mr & Mrs MD) - GW is a gardening programme for bally sake! And the best one being aired for years, so please let us stick the subject in hand - a gardener and his garden!

Rant over (now where's that parapet ......) smiley - laugh

AT 'Love your country garden' really was flimsy material, about 4 minutes of planting a clematis (big woop!) and the rest was advertorial at best.

It reminds me of a video editions of Saturday's colour supplement from the Express (that's not good, BTW).

I feel like I've come full circle with Monty. I loved watching him years ago, when he had the programme with Ann Marie Powell. Despite being a 'fruit & veg hater' I even enjoyed his 'Fork to Fork' programme. There was just something about his style and enthusiasm for what he was doing, that I found inspirational. However, when he took over GW for the first time, I, along with many, many more people was completely turned off with what came across as preaching and lecturing, and his total obession with the veg. I always recorded the programme and f/forwarded through the majority of it. I wasn't happy when I read that he would be once again taking over.

I now feel that I (and Monty) have come full circle. He seems to have gone back to the 'winning way' he had originally, and I've gone back to really enjoying his programmes. The content of GW is much more varied (not all veg) and he seems to have dropped the 'echo warrier' lectures. I actually look forward to his Friday night programmes now. And I never thought I'd be saying that smiley - biggrin
