Why is Gardener's World encouraging people to use moss in their Christmas decorations?

The piece by Rachel de Thame and Rachel Siegfried encourages people to go out into the countryside and rip up great hunks of moss that should stay where it is.

Why does the Ö÷²¥´óÐã advocate mass vandalism?

I have plenty of moss in my garden that I could use and I assume that the flower arranger used her own too. It looked to me as if she would grow it the same as any other plant material for her business. She had got a large garden.

Anyone with a small garden can buy it from a florist.

They did not say that they got their moss from the wild.

Easily pleased from Aylesford here. I thoroughly enjoyed the programme as usual. Nice easy going, laid back, comfort TV, a bit like hot porridge on a frosty winters morning.

Two things slightly jarred, and I'm sure they were done just for the cameras. I cannot believe Monty was going to put that large holly tree into that pot. He MUST have thought that one through. Perhaps it was to make us mere mortals happy that we'd also make the same error. And how can an expert gardener with half-a-dozen well oiled spades not check up on the wheelbarrow tyre?

Never-the-less GW is one of 'mustwatch' programmes as it has been since the days of Percy and Arthur. With the exception of the 'bad old days' a couple of years ago, I enjoy every one.

A Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to ALL of the presenters, and thank you so much for making so many of us happy once a week.

I think they should try to recruit Pam Ayres to do a regular spot on the show - love her.  Me to-once you get over the "staged" permanent mischievous grin which has been her stage hall mark over the years thoroughly enjoyed her practical and considerate knowledge,
The point of Joe and Monty taking up 10 minutes of the programme digging up and moving the holly tree was a waste and could have been far better utilised for pre-Winter jobs and planning especially looking at the state of his waterlogged soil he would have been far better staying off it.
Anyway Happy Christmas to presenters and viewers alike. Ho Ho Ho.

Yep, the holly move was silly. We know Monty has two gardeners doing the work.  So, we are all experts are we and know how to move Holly, well yes those of us who bother to write on here probably do.
Just take a look at the message boards " I am a first time gardener, which way up do I plant spuds?" time and time again.
The Ö÷²¥´óÐã bring those people up to speed in not making most of the mistakes we so called experts made at least once in our gardening years.
The programme has to balance those who know against those who are just starting and do not know.
I thought it did a good job of making it interesting and yet adding a bit of seasonal cheer, the dog with his ears on made me fall about laughing but someone will complain it is degrading to animals!.
I enjoyed it, the show seemed to be over in a flash unlike other years when half an hour seemed more like an eon, Carol adds sunshine on a cold winter night and Rachael is lovely, even Joe did not get up my nose and Monty is like one of my old masters at school, it was all relaxing to me.
Am I easily pleased? people on here who know me would say not having taken me to task for being too outspoken at times, "oh well" we all have our own opinions do we not and long may it be so.
Merry Christmas and happy new year to GW Presenters and those behind the scenes not forgetting all the posters who now seem to be dwindling.
    Frank.

    Ö÷²¥´óÐã-mass vandalism-ever so slightly OTT-and from a "new" poster

I found it quite a pleasant 60 minutes and as usual I learnt things I did not know or had forgotten-answered the" what do I do with my rhubarb" question that is so often posed on these messageboards so that backs up the points that Frank made so eloquently.
As I said myself on a similar topic recently it is a one size fits all programme-just enjoy-there is not -and there probably will not be- much else gardening tv programming.

I liked the holly tree dig out but I bet Aly's would have choked on her lentils watching the end of the show.

That's all but nice to see Monty letting others in his garden just a shame one was not Aly's.......still maybe next year.

The only gripe I had was the bit where they stated their "highlights" of the year. They were all ( apart from Carole's) about visiting other places - surely they should have mentioned things they had done, grown, designed, eaten, achieved in their own gardens - it is a gardening programme, not a travelogue?

Maybe a poster should start a message post for gardens visted.

I rather enjoyed it - I thought there was something for everyone, and new gardeners would have learnt from it was well as "old hands" re-visiting some of the gardening techniques.

How often do we move a mature tree/shrub? Not that often, I would suggest, so the item on moving the holly tree was worthwhile for gardeners of varying expertise.

So - nice to have an hour-long programme that was full of variety, information and entertainment.

I enjoyed most of it. The hour long programme is much better than the skimpy half hour.
I agree with Lowena and others, the things which stood out should have been about things they had done in the garden not where they've been.
The moving of the holly tree I just did'nt get, surely anyone with a bit of sense and certainly an experienced gardener could have gotten the size right. Or was it ment to be an example of how not to do it.
Anyhow it was good to see some gardening on tv, it's been missing too long already.

Nooj, last time I moved a Holly was my time in Rhyl with the army, seems like a century ago, she was hard work to start but a brilliant dancer like a lot of Welsh girls.
Ladynovice, believe me all gardeners from 8 to 80 make mistakes, I can show you how not to do it after years of experience, I am yet to make a good showing of sweet peas, whatever I do they disapoint me in the end. Soil weather and where you are in the country make a huge difference in what we can or cannot succeed with.
    Posh long time no hear.

This was a special that should never have been on, what a waste of time it was. Monty and Carol have had thier day bring back Alys and Toby get Joe on the allotment, bring life back into the program.
It sbeen the worst gardeners world this year ive ever seen. Im an old gardener but this year has not been inspirational at all stuck in Montys garden whats that about its dark dismal well established in Montys own stile, how is it going to get the youngsters out into the garden same goes for Carols Devon garden.
Toby and Alys where a breath of fresh air to gardening, working in a blank canvas just like G Hamilton did he was the one that got me into gardening so inspiring making it fun and easy I'm afraid to say it but with both Monty and Carol they make it boring.
Please please Ö÷²¥´óÐã take us back to enjoyable fun packed progam bring in the new faces take old ones off including A Titshmarsh

Hi Frank - yup, long time no post! I do drop in from time to time, but am rarely moved to post anything these days.

At the risk of annoying other posters I will only say this: there was a time when this board was alive and dynamic. You will remember the Christmas fairy, no doubt, and that we were allowed to have a bit of fun, in between gardening subjects.

We predicted that, by removing the licence to amuse, the boards would be compromised, since those who interacted spent a lot of time helping new gardeners with all sorts of queries, no matter how simple we may have thought them to be.

There was, with this GW Christmas Special, the smallest glimmer of the ability of the Beeb to inform and entertain at the same time. Thus it was on the boards, too.

We can't live in the past - but, hand on heart, I do regret the passing of the dynamic interaction that used to be part and parcel of the gardening world.

Oh, well. My teeth grow longer! My hair grows greyer! I doubt that there's much of a future here - but I will try to be more active than I have been this year (and make of that what you will - a two-edged sword, methinks (smiley - winkeye)

You are right Posh, and the bit that annoy's me is the people who managed to banish those threads also vanished shortly after.
I trawl through when there is a spare minute and try to answer any post that has not had an answer but only if I have experienced the problem, most only get a couple of answers where as once the thread would have gone down the page in no time at all.
This years GW has kept my interest when after the the fiasco of the years before I had turned off, I see some one wants them back, well we all have an opinion and an off button on the TV.
The Special was light and kept me watching so that would mean it succeeded.
My Granddaughter who has a birthday tomoorow wants me to go with her to the Panto, I told her that once we had one on here with us all joining in, we went through some of the stories I still have on file, she laughed as we all did,oh well we have the memories Posh.

Many a name has disappeared - but there are some who take the time and trouble to post regularly to advise and inform (step forward Alina in particular, and take the message board Bafta, or its equivalent!). But there was a lot of good, solid gardening information out there - after all, text book gardening belongs . . . in books. Real gardeners can pass on hands-on experience - something akin to chatting over the garden fence, I suppose.

Now, Frank - panto! Once upon a time, casting decisions would have been difficult here, and auditions would have taken weeks! Now, I fear, there are far fewer candidates (and here speaks a one-time Puss from Puss in Boots, or Wicked Stepmother to Cinderella, which the unkindly amongst us would call type-casting!) and we just wouldn't be allowed to have an on-board Christmas panto, or a band (for which you were nominated to play the spoons, I recall) or - well, anything with a bit of fun.

So - the GW light-hearted aspects were as good as it gets. Will we still be able to exchange our views this time next year I wonder? Hmmmm.

At last, got a few moments to get on here. Just wanted to log my enjoyment of the Christmas Special. Items from around the country should hopefully silence those that feel GW is southern centric. A good mix of content - I particularly liked the wreath making as I always make my own. I've used the same mossy ring for 3 years - always soak it overnight before use and the foliage remains fresh for nearly 3 weeks.

Regarding the Holly transplant - someone remarked that they should have stayed off the boggy soil. The soil looked pretty dry and crumbly to me on HD.

As usual, the friendly banter at the end was a bit forced. The four presenters don't usually work together and it showed but full marks for giving the seasonal bonhomie a go. I look forward to GW 2012.

I enjoyed it more than I expected to. Like others I fail to see why Monty would think it a good idea to cram a holly tree into an inadequate plastic bucket but it was good to see the digging outbtechnique being shown and also the switch to heeling in. The flat tyre was farcical and he should be embarrassed.

Apart from that I liked it. No forced cheer and bonhomie or dire set pieces like we suffered at Berryfields and Greenacres. Even the wreath making was good.

Their personal highlights of the year were meant to be their GW highlights. We didn't see what Rachel and Joe did in their own gardens so they're bound to talk about visits they made.

As for Monty's late sown sweet peas, the last of mine finished flowering just last week - and I hadn't picked any and thus encouraged more flowering since September. Pretty good going and now they're heading for the compost heap to feed next year's goodies in the garden.
