My next door neighbour died having lived in the house for 45yrs, sold by auction to investor developer. Back yard 2 old crab apple tree,s loved by goldfinch, tits, butterflies, the wall large evergreen vine hedge, when flowering loved by bee,s butterflies, small birds for nesting, all chopped down, nature area and privacy gone, now more liable for stone throwing and intruders, being onto public footpath used by teens.
Front raised garden, perenialls, masses of aquillages, lge red poppies, campanula,s bluebells, others, mowed down and sprayed with weedkiller to be replaced by concrete.
Side garden shrubbery, large cherry blossom
now flowering, lge 8ft acer beautiful, lge potentilla, holly, old scented rose bush,s,
trailing evergreens, much more, new tenant says its to go, but not in the way or blocks anything, not suitable for parking being raised 3ft, old couple who owned it carried on gardening in wheelchairs later, and its wedge shaped, plus adjoining it a driveway for 2 cars, the shrubbery enhances their house and the lane, but it seems many younger people, judging by the few gardens left with perenialls, annuals, and shrubbery belong to middle and older people, cannot see any younger peoples gardens simular, not in my area, all lawn or concrete, hedgerows gone, fencing in place to add to it. Dont know if its to do with political and social disenpowerment, or just laziness, soul less ness, they cant see anything of beauty and worth in flowers and tree,s, birds, bee,s, l also saw one man going around his garden spraying as his little girl told him `look there,s another`, presumably spiders, beetles, what is wrong with them, are they wimps, can they not cope with seeing anything living near them, so destructive, then we wonder why it evolves to destructiveness of self and others.
Why are parents and school not teaching the value of nature, and the need for our own survival, as you can surmise l just despair with individuals and authorities destroying so much at such a rate.
Cost of everything, value of nothing. Could Gardening progs, local authorities, goverment, have a campaign to influence new generations to see the wonder and value of plants, shrubs and tree,s, and the creatures that rely on it, humans included. l realise other posters are gardeners to preaching to the converted, so more for gardening programme makers.
Scuse little rant, just something l feel very strongly about, cant abide destructiveness, which seems to be increasing at all levels, my area a lot

Agree it is a shame, and if more people started to appreciate the value of nature the world would be a better place.

One thing I don鈥檛 agree with though 鈥 it鈥檚 not a younger generation thing, age has nothing to do with it. I am approaching retirement age and I know lots of people my age who do not value or have any interest whatsoever in gardens nature or anything remotely related. Sad but true. I also know many 鈥測oung鈥 people who do.

Just remember when we blame it on the 鈥測oung uns鈥 we are the generation responsible for educating them, so where does the blame really lie?

    smiley - ok

    No, it's not age.
Same thing happened to a garden in our village when the house was sold. Lady had tended it for years. New tennants didn't move in for months, meanwhile they had contractors working all hours destroying everything and replacing with concrete and grass.
Now they wonder why no-one wants to know them!

That's a bit harsh!! It is now their garden and they can have it how best suits them. Not everyone has the time, energy or inclination to garden. The people who "don't want to know them" are just plain nasty! smiley - sadface
