The 主播大秀 Philharmonic鈥檚 programme spans more than two centuries, opening with Haydn鈥檚鈥楲a reine鈥� Symphony and closing with Stravinsky鈥檚 fairy-tale ballet 'Petrushka'. Selected pieces will be broadcast on 主播大秀 Four on Thursday 6 August.

About this event

Petrushka, with its bustling Shrovetide fair and colourful carnival characters, launches a week dominated by the music of Stravinsky. All three of the composer鈥檚 great scores for Diaghilev鈥檚 Ballets Russes are performed this season 鈥� bright, folkloric textures gradually giving way to new musical brutality. Haydn鈥檚鈥楶aris鈥� Symphony set the City of Light talking over a century earlier. The second movement of 鈥楲a reine鈥� (The Queen) shares Stravinsky鈥檚 sophisticated approach to folk music, while Viennese maverick HK Gruber鈥檚 into the open 鈥� echoes the ballet鈥檚 vivid scoring with instruments from Thailand, Africa and South America. Former 主播大秀 Young Musician of the Year Colin Currie joins the 主播大秀 Philharmonic under its Principal Guest Conductor John Storg氓rds.
