The death in March 2016 of Sir Peter Maxwell Davies 鈥� born in Salford, educated in Manchester 鈥� deprived British music of one of its greatest assets and fiercest advocates. Tonight, H氓kan Hardenberger joins John Storg氓rds and the orchestra to pay tribute with a performance of Max鈥檚 terrific Trumpet Concerto. The concert begins with Nielsen鈥檚 dynamic overture to Maskarade, then ends with Shostakovich鈥檚 vast Tenth Symphony: packed with coded messages, it鈥檚 an intense, compelling essay on life and death under Stalin.
