Mary Poppins DVD (1964)

This enchanting family film is one of Disney's best and the five Oscars it won go some way to confirming its status. If you haven't seen it for years, you may well be surprised to find just how entertaining it still is.

One of the film's strengths is the Oscar winning Best Musical Score and on DVD it is sensational. For this release Disney has remastered the soundtrack to 5.1. Right from the opening overture the speakers are filled with the orchestral score, with the various instruments well directed around the sound stage. All the wonderful songs are equally enjoyable and are played with a real vigour that adds a lot of fun to the film.

If you'll remember one thing about "Mary Poppins", it's the vibrant colour scheme. The Technicolor print used for this transfer is in good shape and despite the gaudy tones, the picture is often quite sharp as in the 'hurricane of nannies' in chapter 7.

The only drawbacks to this disc is that it's a 'flipper', so watch out for grubby little hands changing the disc over!
