Baz Luhrmann began his career as an actor. But it wasn't long before he found that his unique, flamboyant talent was better served behind the scenes. Born BazMark Luhrmann in 1964, Australia, he made his debut as an actor in "The Winter of Our Dreams" (1982), where he appeared with Judy Davis, followed by a role in "The Dark Room" (1984).
Throughout the 80s and early 90s, Luhrmann produced notable work in musical theatre and opera. These included a 1950s-set version of Giacomo Puccini's "La Boh猫me" and a stage version of "Strictly Ballroom".
Luhrmann made his directorial debut with the film of "Strictly Ballroom" in 1992. He injected dazzling colours and energetic dance moves into the stuffy world of ballroom dancing. The film was a global hit, winning eight Australian Film Institute Awards, three , and the 's Prix de Jeunesse. And it established Luhrmann as a fresh, vibrant talent.
Luhrmann worked his magic again in "William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet" (1996). With superb cinematography and a conversational approach to the prose, this was another box office hit. In 1999, he also scored a surprise-hit single with "Everybody's Free (to Wear Sunscreen)" on his label, Bazmark Music, setting the text of a collegiate speech to music from the film.
Luhrmann's "Moulin Rouge" (2001) focuses on a young writer's foray into the bohemian underworld of Montmartre, Paris. His imaginative direction of a world of sex, drugs, and the Can-Can will no doubt provide Luhrmann with hit number three.
