Jonny Lee Miller

Dracula 2001

Interviewed by Jane Crowther

Why do you think vampire films are so popular?

I think it's to do with the fact that there's an attraction to evil. Vampires are immortal, you can do whatever you want, and get away with it. And there's the seduction part of course, sex is a big part of the vampire thing.

This is a Wes Craven film, was there a sense of it being a franchise?

Not personally speaking. Firstly, Wes is a very nice man and secondly, you know he's well versed in that kind of genre and he has all these people around who know what they're doing. So, in that sense, of course you're aware of it but it doesn't filter down.

Talking of franchises, there's blatant product placement for Virgin in this film. How do you feel about that?

It is blatant but the whole thing is that there's a big sign saying 'Virgin' everywhere and they wouldn't have just done that with 'Coke', if you know what I mean. I think it's meant to be a gag.

What was the most challenging aspect of the special effects and stunts?

The challenging part about doing stuff like that is when you're looking at a blue screen and they're saying "now you're flying across the room!" And "now it's the first time you've seen a vampire!". That's more challenging to me than doing the fight sequences. When you're acting to a piece of sticky tape rather than seeing someone come back from the dead, that's when it's difficult.
