This unassuming little feelgood film slips out here in the UK onto video and DVD, likely because it concerns American Football so therefore we won't enjoy it. It's good fun though and worth checking out on DVD.
Picture quality is fine, with the muted colour scheme transferring well to disc.
The 5.1 sound mix is a noisy effort that really kicks into gear any time there's a scene at a game. The surrounds fill up with stadium cheers, while sub woofer underpinned blows resonate through the front speakers every time the football players collide.
Director Howard Deutch provides a commentary with moments of interest. He doesn't get off to a good start though with his first statement, which is about the four months that it took him to decide on the song for the opening titles of the movie.
Surprisingly, the HBO First Look 'making of' featurette is better value. Sure, there's the usual cheesy veneer and dull interviews where the cast and crew talk about character motivation, but there's a fair amount of humour too. Orlando Jones provides most of the laughs, and he takes us through a supplemental featurette about creating the football action. "Don't hit the actors means don't hit Keanu!" he squeals as behind-the-scenes footage of large men sailing through the air plays before us. It's good fun, and if you like your laughs cheesy then this disc shouldn't disappoint.
