Jack and Sarah DVD (1995)

Richard E Grant juggles fatherhood and a beautiful babysitter in this small but delightful British comedy drama. A quality DVD release provides a great excuse to see this movie again.

While the picture may not be anamorphic (a process which carries extra coding to create a more detailed picture on a widescreen TV), it's clear and free of grain.

The 2.0 surround mix has little to do other than carry the light-but-busy orchestral score, which it does with pleasing ease. What may surprise a few people is that the music is by Simon Boswell, who created the synth-heavy accompaniments to the Italian Giallo film "Stage Fright" and the cult science fiction effort "Hardware".

Most MGM back catalogue DVDs only offer a trailer as an extra feature. This disc is a bit of a treat then as it offers six! They're all for "Jack and Sarah" and they illustrate the different approaches used to sell the film. Worth watching, especially if you're interested in the marketing and promotion of movies (a talent that appears to be absent from most UK distributors).
