Chariots of Fire DVD (1981)

"The British are coming," came the cry at the Oscars with the success that this modest but superb drama garnered. We all know what happened next and now 20 years on, "Chariots of Fire" slips out onto a frankly feeble DVD.

The pale colour scheme of the movie transfers reasonably well to disc, although a few scenes, like the beach run, are a little grainy.

Memorable in part for the rousing Vangelis theme, Fox have not bothered to re-mix the original stereo track into 5.1. What we do get is a 2.0 surround effort that's fine, but lightweight in terms of bass.

Some retrospective interviews would have been welcome here. What do we get? Nothing. Not even a trailer. Yes, the DVD is an improvement over previous VHS editions, but the bet here is that Fox will one day release a collector's edition of this film.
