Made DVD (2002)

Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn team-up to try and revisit the "Swingers" magic and very nearly do it, but whatever your opinion of "Made", the DVD is one hot entertainment proposition. We'll take two.

TECHNICAL FEATURES

Picture Shot on a modest budget, the film has a naturally grainy look but it's transferred to DVD without adding any extra.

Sound You get an option of either a Dolby or DTS 5.1 sound mix. You won't miss out on much if you don't have DTS decoding. Both tracks don't have many major effects to deal with, but scenes like the one set in a club do make good use of the subwoofer and surround speakers.

SPECIAL FEATURES

Audio Commentary Writer, director, and star Jon Favreau is joined by co-star Vince Vaughn, and co-producer Peter Billingsley for a light-hearted commentary romp through the movie. Jon is clearly enthusiastic about the film, from pointing out the lack of studio company credits at the beginning, to explaining how they managed to get Jimmy Nickerson (who worked on "Raging Bull" and "Rocky") to co-ordinate the opening boxing scene. There's an incredible amount of deleted footage that didn't make it into the movie and this is discussed at the appropriate scenes, with the usual consensus that it was veering towards being too goofy.

Telestrator Commentary It's the same commentary as above, but with the dubious addition of Sky Sports-style screen scribbles to point out small visual details, or highlight uncredited cameos.

Getting it Made As Jon Favreau explains in this nine minute featurette, he and Vaughn were keen to get together to make another movie after the working experience of "Swingers". Both agree that they share the same sense of humour, and wanted to have control over a film without studio interference, thus "Made" was born.

The Creative Process Favreau has high hopes from the viewer as he details how the film should play to you on first, second, and third viewings. His confidence and enthusiasm are infectious though, and when you have co-star Peter Flak squinting at the camera and declaring "I thought it was very beautifully written", you soon find yourself appreciating the movie, despite its faults. There's also behind-the-scenes footage in this 14 minute featurette including the cast playing around, with Falk telling Vaughn to "Get the f*** out of my eyeline".

Making the Music of "Made" You're inclined to wonder if the title of this 15 minute featurette shouldn't be investigated under the Trade Descriptions Act as the actual amount of content regarding the music of the movie is small. Still, there's room for some more quips from Peter Falk as he wryly observes of Favreau and Vaughn that, "it's like they were separated at birth".

Deleted Scenes In this section you'll find four deleted scenes and an alternate ending. All come with commentary, with Favreau arguing that the alternate ending was "a little precious and didn't have the desired effect".

Outtakes At 25 minutes, this could well be the longest amount of outtakes on DVD. Not only that, but Peter Falk should be given an award for the most patient man on earth, as Vaughn and Favreau take it in turns to screw-up take after take, with Falk calmly hitting his mark every time.

Additional Extra Features Also on the DVD is one short sweet trailer.
