Black Christmas DVD (1974)

As the sleeve rightly says, "Before Halloween there was Black Christmas." Made in 1974, this effective Canadian stalk'n'slash movie mixes dark humour with sinister tension. And while Halloween undoubtedly featured some excellent prowling camerawork, there are some similar techniques on offer here. Thanks to the DVD you can find out how they did it.

Mature Love

Stars of the film Lynne Griffin and Art Hindle are our hosts for the documentary Black Christmas Revisited. It appears they're quite hot for one another, as any opportunity to grapple or re-enact kisses is enthusiastically explored. At times you may find their behaviour nauseating, but in amongst their aged flirting techniques are some interviews in which crew members reveal interesting details about the camerawork. Plus you do get such bonus treats as Lynne sticking her head in a plastic bag and a grand view of Art's extraordinary mane of white chest hair. Why, you'd swear it was growing before your eyes.

Revived Christmas

For an old low-budget chiller, Metro Tartan has put together a quality, if occasionally slightly soft, transfer from a good print. The 5.1 sound mix adds atmosphere to the experience.

Revisiting Terror

Two other features worth a look include a tour of the house - as it is now - by fansite creator Dan Duffin. Plus director Bob Clark delivers a great audio commentary where he pokes fun at the stuff that doesn't work and reveals how the best moments were created.
