Ridley Scott may have made "an enticing but defective dramedy", with Nicholas Cage playing a master scam merchant, but his involvement in any DVD always makes for an interesting disc, just like this one.

Ridley Scott consistently delivers precision commentaries that leave you in no doubt as to his intentions regarding every aspect of his direction. Methodical and honest, for once, he doesn't have to talk about a raft of special effects, but rather about plot development, character motivation, and how his cast worked with it all. Also inserted into the track are comments from the writing team of brothers Nicholas and Ted Griffin. They're funny guys and balance out with humour Scott's relentless analysis.
Inspirational 'Making Of'!
'Making of' featurettes on DVDs are the bain of a reviewer's life, with cheesy backslapping and moronically obvious comments from cast and crew the best that most can offer. Some are refreshingly different though and none more so than the 71-minute effort here.
We get an amazing amount of access into this production, from initial casting meetings right through to screenings of the film. Highlights include Nic Cage going through hilarious costume tests, Ridley sifting through videotape auditions, Hans Zimmer trying out silly music for the film and Ridley losing the plot over a jammed camera. It's rare for any DVD to offer such an effective insight into a film production.
