The Dukes Of Hazzard: Unseen DVD (2005)

Johnny Knoxville and Seann William Scott were perfectly cast in Jay Chandrasekhar's "loud, obnoxious and moronic" film version of The Dukes Of Hazzard. Meanwhile popster Jessica Simpson made her big screen debut in hot pants that were almost as scant as the plot. Simpson stalkers and nostalgic fans of the 80s TV show flocked in the first week, but it wasn't long before the General Lee crashed out of the chart.

Hazardous Material

The Unseen tag on this DVD is a call to the pervs and horny teenage boys who were disappointed by the lack of bare breasts the first time around. A four-minute reel of Unseen additional scenes features bare-breasted women smoking pot, bare-breasted woman painting and bare-breasted women just for the hell of it. Meanwhile a reel of Unseen bloopers features random swearing and Knoxville miming a sex act on Mr Scott.

The Dukes Of Hazzard: Unseen DVD

Coupled with this unfunny Unseen footage are two more reels of deleted bits. The first is over 25 minutes long which is just enough time to slip into a coma as Scott and Knoxville whoop it up in a desperate attempt to convince us they're having fun. For added cringe value there's a scene between Linda Carter and Willy Nelson in which the crusty country crooner makes repeated, eyebrow-waggling references to her "blueberry muffins". The only thing funny about the second blooper reel is watching Simpson try to talk and act at the same time.

Deep South

"I don't have to work at all," says Simpson in The Short Shorts featurette, "All I have to do is put on a pair of short shorts and smile." Aside from this startling admission, this featurette unveils all the careful mathematical calculations that went into tailoring those Daisy Dukes to the precise curvature of Simpson's buttocks... Of course the other big star of the movie was the General Lee, which is the subject of two featurettes. Chandrasekhar explains "it was the whole reason" he did the movie while the effects people give an inside-look into the staging of key stunts. FYI: For the bits where the car leaps into the air and flips, two plastic dummies stood in for Knoxville and Scott. Make up your own jokes...

Scott digs himself a deeper ditch, enthusing, "I'm like Keanu in The Matrix!" in The Hazards Of Dukes, a run-of-the-mill look at the making of the film. The only hint of what really went on behind the scenes is revealed when Knoxville butts heads with Chandrasekhar over a gag in the script; "I'm still trying to figure this joke out," he tells the director. "It's like you're reluctantly going along with this," explains Chandrasekhar. "Yeah," answers Knoxville, "You mean like doing this movie?" Nuff said.

Two Easter eggs are hidden on Scott's T-shirt and Burt Reynolds' ring in the special features menus. The first provides a showcase for an avid Dukes fan whose foot is tattooed like the General Lee (okaay...) and the second finds the stars' dummy doubles living it up in the red light district. We're ashamed to admit that the second one is actually quite funny, but that is no way an endorsement for buying this DVD. For the most part it's as enjoyable as having a pair of Daisy Dukes ride up your backside.
