Krrish (2006)
12aContains moderate violence

Superman, Spider-Man, and The Matrix meet Bollywood in Krrish, India's first superhero flick. And who better to deliver an all-singing, all-dancing, caped crusader than father-and-son team Rakesh and Hrithik Roshan, the pair who gave Bollywood its first alien in Koi Mil Gaya. The sequel sees Hrithik transform from gifted child to reluctant saviour whose destiny lies in ridding the world of evil. Packed with enough special effects to rival any Hollywood feature, this action adventure is a technical landmark in Hindi cinema.

Picking up from where Koi Mil Gaya left off, we see Krishna (Hrithik Roshan) born with magical powers - a legacy from his late father. Guarded by his grandmother (Rekha), he lives a protected existence high in the Himalayan Mountains until he falls in love with Priya (Priyanka Chopra), who beckons him to Singapore. It is there he crosses paths with Dr. Arya (Naseeruddin Shah), a megalomaniac scientist on the verge of changing the future forever.

But it's not until half way through the three hour epic that things gain momentum and Roshan senior turns the saccharine-sweet love story into a high-tech swashbuckling quest, courtesy of renowned Hong Kong action master Tony Ching Siu Tung (Hero, House of Flying Daggers). For it is Tung who helps Krishna unleash his strength and become Krrish, the only person with the power to block Arya's ruthless ambitions.

"HRITHIK'S SLICKER THAN THE FLABBY SCRIPT"

Luckily Hrithik has the right mix of brawn and emotional vulnerability to pull off the masked marvel convincingly. It's just a shame the flabby script isn't as slick as his performance. While low on originality, together the Roshans succeed in creating a blockbuster that will no doubt please Bollywood fans, who can at long last witness the birth of their very own superhero.
