Putting out fires and deflecting missiles is all in a day's work for Uma Thurman as superhero G-Girl. Not surprisingly she proves too hot to handle for Luke Wilson, starring as her hapless beau Matt in the enjoyably silly My Super Ex-Girlfriend. Veteran comedy helmer Ivan Reitman manages to run quite a distance with this high-concept premise and while he doesn't scale the heights of his 1984 hit Ghostbusters, he does make it fly.

Former Simpsons scribe Don Payne charts the relationship from first glance to bitter end in his script, exploiting a bizarre situation with a cheekily perverse curiosity. Inevitably there's fun to be had with scenes of superhuman coitus, but the laughs definitely belong to Wilson with his deadpan expression and general willingness to look daft as the nebbish left holding the handbag.

Thurman handles the derring-do with aplomb, but the script does short-change her in the latter stages. G-Girl is initially intriguing, blessed with special powers yet socially inept and - like many a modern woman - feels under-appreciated. Sadly, when Matt ditches her, she mutates into a caricature of Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction (on steroids). Okay, so watching her throw a live shark at Matt is outrageously funny, but it's a shame the gags overtake all sympathy for her character. As her love rival, Anna Faris's part is also underwritten, but Eddie Izzard is a delight as prickly super-villain Professor Bedlam. With such an amiable cast and lots of crisp dialogue, you can forgive the chinks in the armour.
