Jesse Metcalfe attempts to capitalise on his rent-a-hunk image from TV's Desperate Housewives to play the eponymous high school heartbreaker in John Tucker Must Die. Despite the intriguing premise (a gaggle of girls led by Brittany Snow team up to take revenge), director Betty Thomas was criticised for getting "mired in clich茅s". It didn't score very highly with paying punters either.
Dazed And Confused
Nobody is really sure what 'Grrrl Power' means although it's the title of a behind-the-scenes featurette that talks to cast and crew. Thomas admits to being baffled by the terminology whilst young starlet Sophia Bush reckons it has something to do with girls getting their claws out. She adds that she was wary of signing on for this project because of "the potential for all these people to be catty". We're then quickly assured that all the girls on set were actually "wonderful" human beings, which frankly makes for dull viewing. Slightly more revealing is a three-minute set tour with Mr Metcalfe. He takes us inside his trailer, which happens to be painted pink with matching floral curtains. Hmm...
In the featurette On The Rebound, Thomas explains that putting Metcalfe in a lady's thong (for a key scene) was all her idea, but we suspect 'The Big Jesse' enjoyed it. However, he quickly dismisses any aspersions cast upon his masculinity by showing us his prodigious ball skills (as in, basketball). Then, in his entry for the Kodiak Yearbook, Metcalfe comes undone again by describing himself rather mysteriously as "the alternative kid" at high school. Hmm...
Tuckered Out
Two deleted scenes barely amount to a minute and not surprisingly, add very little to the story. First off, JT (Metcalfe) drops his little brother (Penn Badgley) a couple of hints on how to pick up "intellectual chicks" and secondly, a bunch of Chinese fisherman talk Chinese (funnily enough) after saving the girls from a waterborne spy mission gone awry. In an optional commentary, Thomas explains, "I have no idea what they are saying..." Edifying, n'est pas?
We don't know why Thomas bothered to give a commentary for the film (alongside editor Matt Friedman). Perhaps the most telling behind-the-scenes titbit she offers is the fact that screenwriter Jeff Lowell didn't bother showing up to join them. (Unlike the aforementioned editor, he obviously felt it best to cut and run). It's a measure of how inane this film is that Thomas ultimately descends to talking about hair and how it reflects on the emotional maturity of the characters. At least that provides us with a neat segue to Matt Willis, whose music video for Hey Kid is also thrown in, along with a live performance by People In Planes.
In summation, if this DVD were a high school teen, it would be voted the least likely to succeed.
