Molly's Way (2007)
12a

French-Iranian director Emily Atef's debut won't have your pulse racing; instead, it aims at subtler, and deeper hidden targets. Young Irishwoman Molly (Mairead McKinley) arrives in small town Poland to find the man with whom she had a one night stand back in Ireland; she wants to tell him that she is pregnant. But her search, punctuated by a series of encounters with locals, turns into a journey of spiritual self-discovery. This is a deft, intelligent, and sometimes moving film; if a little slow in places.

Molly takes up residence at a boarding house and brothel run by the aged and spiteful Britta (Ute Gerlach), and earns money by cleaning the place. Meanwhile, she gets a firsthand look at the lives of working girls Sophia (Geno Lechner), Isabella (Adriana Bierdrzynska), and Violetta (Anna Illczuk) who subsist via visits from local men in this blasted out former mining town. But Molly remains determined to find Marcin (Jan Wieczorkowski), the father of her unborn child.

"A TENDENCY TO PLOD"

This is an up-close look at the desolate post-industrial landscape that can rise when old industries crumble; and at the tangled human webs being spun now that millions of east Europeans can come west in the newly expanded EU. McKinley combines a rare vulnerability and authenticity, and she's helped by a fine supporting cast. Molly's Way, though, does have a tendency to plod, and some might feel short changed by the conclusion of Molly's encounter with Marcin. Still, if you prefer your films oblique and searching, then Molly's Way is for you.

Molly's Way is released in UK cinemas on Friday 16th March 2007.
