Lovewrecked (2007)
PGContains mild language, sex references and comic violence

Despite the duff-sounding title, Lovewrecked isn't entirely the damp squib it could have been. That's thanks largely to the likeability of its rising star Amanda Bynes, although at times even her comedic flair struggles to rescue this daft teen pic from drowning in a sea of mediocrity. Bynes plays Jenny, a love-struck teenager who can't quite believe her luck when she ends up marooned on a desert island with her rock star idol (Chris Caramack). Absurd plot aside, it's shamelessly lightweight fare that serves up a few rib-tickling moments.

Unfortunately, none of these unfurl in the first half hour, by which point you feel like flattening Caramack. He literally goes overboard with ridiculous rock posturing, while members of his entourage churn out performances of barrel-scraping blandness. By the time the supposedly Big Plot Twist occurs, the ship of audience interest is likely to have sailed.

"A FEW RIB-TICKLING MOMENTS"

The equivalent of a long-winded joke, Lovewrecked finally starts to turn into an entertaining romp when Bynes' love rival Alexis discovers the big secret, and tries to scupper Jenny's plans. Cue each trying to outwit the other with puerile tactics, including a farting machine. This may smack of desperation, but let's face it, exploiting bodily functions has always been a good source of screwball comedy. Hardly challenging then, but not without a certain charm - at least it does if you're thirteen.

Lovewrecked is released in UK cinemas on Friday 18th May 2007.
