License To Wed (2007)
12aContains moderate sex references and one use of mouthed strong language

A happy couple fall out when they take a pre-wedding course in License To Wed. Sadie (Mandy Moore) and Ben (John Krasinski - The Office: An American Workplace) have never had an argument - but then the priest from hell, Reverend Frank (Robin Williams) comes along. It's a bit like Anger Management, although Jack Nicholson did funny/annoying better. Robin Williams is merely annoying in this comedy with a few lively laughs, but a nonsensical and uninvolving plot.

Williams has become so lauded for his creepy-serious roles in films like One Hour Photo, it's a shame to see him taking an easy buck in this lopsided romantic comedy. Reverend Frank is a spectre who haunts every scene, controlling Sadie and Ben's lives by bugging their apartment, getting them to look after fake babies and so on. He's an inanely grinning wise-cracker who would be sinister if the tone of the film wasn't so light.

"NOTHING RINGS TRUE"

There are several amusing scenes - even the fake spewing babies are briefly funny - and Moore and Krasinski make a sweet, very watchable couple. But questions abound. How does Reverend Frank get away with constantly breaking the law? Why does the film so readily forgive him? Why doesn't Sadie even react when she finds out he's been listening to her and Ben in bed? Nothing rings true. If you're a fan of the two young leads, this is worth a look, but you'd have to be a very big fan of Williams to find the whole thing hilarious.

License To Wed is out in the UK on 10th August 2007.
