Superbad (2007)
15Contains frequent strong sex references and language

School's out for buddies Seth and Evan (Jonah Hill and Michael Cera) in pant-wettingly funny comedy Superbad. Tonight's the last chance to get laid before their hot classmates disappear to college. Like the heroes of high fantasy, they embark on an epic quest for alcohol, praying that they can become some high school teen's drunken mistake. Meanwhile, their friend Fogell (Christopher Mintz Plasse) is on a trek of his own with a pair of hapless cops and a fake ID in the name of "McLovin".

2007 is shaping up to be a vintage year for comedy, and it's largely thanks to one man. While bloated Hollywood vehicles like Evan Almighty beach themselves at the box office, producer Judd Apatow's slapdash slacker laffers - The 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up and now Superbad - deliver an almighty whack to the public's funnybone without even seeming to really try. Superbad is probably his best film so far, a 21st century splicing of those old frathouse favourites Porky's and Revenge Of The Nerds, perfectly pitched at a generation sexually bewildered by a banquet of free pornography.

"SUPERBAD IS AN ABSOLUTE RIOT"

And if that sounds terribly serious, don't be put off: Superbad is an absolute riot. There are more belly laughs here than you'll find in a dozen high-profile star vehicles. It's as if Mike Leigh decided to make a gross-out comedy. The young leads are utterly immersed in their characters (Mintz-Plasse, a complete newcomer, is jaw-droppingly brilliant), and there's a tangy, semi-improvised feel to the dialogue - this, you suspect, is exactly how horndog geeks really communicate. For all its raunchy trappings, there is fierce sense of pain running through Superbad that stays with you long after the chuckles have died away.

Superbad is out in the UK on 14th September 2007.
