Mummy-ji - She Rocks! (2007)
UContains mild language

Mothers have always had a revered place in Bollywood films and this Anglo-Punjabi film is supposed to be a tribute to them all. It's a fresh approach to a traditional family story but it doesn't quite cut the mustard. Mummyji shows her motherly love by doing anything and everything possible for the sake of her family, whether they like it or not. Whether you love this mummy or not, you're sure to identify with her.

A 'slice of life' in Chandigarh, Punjab leads us into Baby Arora's (Kirron Kher) world, where she dotes on her family while husband Rajinder (Kanwaljit Singh) focuses on business matters. She's a modern day mum but still has traditional values, and plans to find suitable girls for her two sons to marry; someone traditional for restaurant manager son, Karan and an NRI (non residential Indian) for her doctor son, Arjun. In an attempt to challenge traditional gender stereotypes, Baby is happy to leave daughter Simran to live her life before settling down. True to her word, she finds the perfect daughters-in-law, but all is not as it seems. Jackie Shroff and Divya Dutta complete the core cast, playing Baby's lifelong admirer and her gossiping maid.

"NOT WITHOUT FLAWS"

Although Pammi Somal's screenplay is disjointed and tries too hard to be modern (the dialogue is mostly in English and doesn't always translate well) Kirron Kher is larger than life as Mummy-ji. Her joint saviour is Dutta, who adds a much needed lift to a tedious plot filled with two dimensional characters. Mummy-ji doesn't exactly rock, but it does unroll slowly with moments of warmth and familiarity

Mummy-ji - She Rocks! is out in the UK on 28th Aug 2007.
