Here's a romantic comedy that manages to be cute without sending viewers barrelling into the bathroom to toss their cookies. Our hero is Will Hayes (Ryan Reynolds), a divorcee with a precocious young daughter (Abigail Breslin). Late one night, he finds himself telling her the story of his love life, while she tries to guess which one of three women is her real mom - a neat gimmick that delivers the story in flashback, with predictably adorable interruptions from the moppet.

Will's tale is set against the backdrop of the Clinton election campaign, where he works as a lowly stapler and toilet roll resupply manager. Freshly arrived in New York with adoring fiancee Elizabeth Banks left behind in Wisconsin, Will is suddenly caught between two potential infidelities: will he go for Isla Fisher's kooky , warm-hearted underachiever, or will he fall for the sultry charms of Rachel Wiesz's hard-nosed journalist? Ah, we should all have such problems.

"BRESLIN'S... THE REAL HEART OF THE STORY"

Definitely Maybe has two problems (apart from that stupid title, which we'll just skip over). Firstly, it's a good twenty minutes too long for such fluff, and second it's hard to care very much about Will's troubles, since he comes across as the guy who will always get the gorgeous girl at some point, possibly all three. Breslin's cutie-pie daughter quickly becomes the real heart of the story, but that's no bad thing, since she's the one with the most at stake. There are sufficient chuckles to keep the motor running, and Kevin Kline delivers a great turn as a booze-sodden, womanising college prof.
