Martin Scorsese indulges the little boy inside him in Shine A Light, filming The Rolling Stones in concert at New York's cosy Beacon Theatre in 2006. The same could be said for Mick Jagger, who just keeps on rolling despite having reached the qualifying age for a free bus pass. It's that relentless arm-popping, foot-stomping energy that keeps the film in motion when Scorsese takes his foot off the pedal, preferring to sit back and watch, not scrutinize.

The director puts himself in the frame at the start, politely wrangling with Jagger over last-minute preparations. It turns out the bad boy of rock is worried that swinging overhead cameras might be a tad dangerous for the crowd. Thankfully Scorsese gets his way playing it bashful: 'Aw shucks, Mick...'. Not only do the cameras swing but they swoop into extreme close-up - so close you can see Jagger's fillings as he belts out an eclectic set from Jumping Jack Flash to Just My Imagination, a snarling cover of The Temptations' classic.

"CHEEKY SENSE OF HUMOUR"

A duet with Christina Aguilera gives Jagger a chance to work those old snake hips and a rendition of Champagne And Reefer with bluesman Buddy Guy tickles the funny bone. That cheeky sense of humour also comes across in snippets of archive interviews but, disappointingly, Scorsese doesn't get any talk time backstage. Up front he captures the yin-yang dynamic between Jagger and Keith Richards, but Ronnie Wood mopes in the background and, whenever the camera does catch Charlie Watts behind the drums, he looks like he'd rather be at home with a milky drink. There is an element of the guys sending themselves up: Richards greets the crowd with, 'Nice to see you all, nice to see anyone really.' Alas, his solo performance actually does fall down dead. Scorsese holds back for too long on classics like Sympathy For The Devil and Brown Sugar, skipping others completely. Fans mightn't get the total satisfaction they're after, but the Stones do a lot more than try.
