The Hare Piece

Andy O'Hare goes to more gigs than you can shake a stick at. He lives in Worcester, but says he prefers the music scene in Hereford. This is his weekly 'what's live and local' blog about the thriving music scene in the two counties.

The Big Chill Festival @ Eastnor听Deer Park 09.08.09

They've been going (on and off) for 40 years (or more) - and Big Chill Sunday was my chance to finally catch an unbelievable reformation of one of this old ligger's biggest influences - and one of the truly unique acts of rock'n'roll. Well, in my view anyway!

It was great to see that the amazing Big Chill atmosphere was still there after nearly four days of non-stop quality music - and I warmed up with a blast or two from the Big Country-ish Broken Records with a slab of world music thrown in from Amadou And Miriam. It was also great to bump into Ray of The Transcendence Experience and Nicky of The Brethren.

I told you last Friday what'd be my highlight of this year's Big Chill - or even this decade - and this was the first time I've ever seen the extremely elusive and legendary underground outfit Gong, with their three big-hitters from the Radio Gnome trilogy of albums from the seventies - in Daevid Allen, Gilli Smyth and Steve Hillage.

I've gotta admit that I was expecting a half-baked set of amateurish and dated nostalgia from the self-proclaimed 'floating anarchists' - but what we got was a polished set of feel-good rock (with a twist) from three legends who, it's gotta be said, have aged incredibly well after their freely-admitted avant-garde excesses of the last 40 years. We got all the classic numbers about flying teapots and pothead pixies from albums like 'Angels Egg' and 'Camembert Electrique' coupled with an awesomely psychedelic back-projection - and despite over-running, Gong quite rightly got an unprecedented encore! Before heading home, with a little extra lift in my stride, I did catch a bit of 'Road To Nowhere' from David Byrne on the Open Air Stage. He's another one of my heroes, but sorry mate, tonight you were second fiddle to the main show. Vive le Gong!
