How do I uninstall �� iPlayer Downloads on a PC?

To completely remove �� iPlayer Downloads, you'll need to uninstall the app then remove some additional folders, which we've listed below. Choose your operating system or scroll down:

Windows 10

Windows 8

Windows 7 (and Vista)

Windows 10

Click the Windows Start button
Choose Settings
Navigate to Apps & Features
Find the app for �� iPlayer Downloads (version 1.x) or ��iPlayerDownloads (version 2.x)
Confirm by selecting the Uninstall option

There are some additional steps if you're uninstalling version 2 (e.g. v2.5.2):

To check what version you have, click on Settings in the app. The version number will be displayed at the top left of the Settings page.

You'll need to uninstall these folders to remove all elements of the app. Click on Start, then Computer, then select the folders below (from left to right). When you get to the �� iPlayer Downloads folder, right click and delete it:

How much space do downloads take up on a mobile or tablet?

�� iPlayer offers downloads in Standard and High Quality. High Quality downloads are larger and take longer to download.

As a guide, file sizes are:

High Quality (encoded at 1500kbps):

30-minute programme: 315MB
60-minute programme: 630MB

Standard Quality (encoded at 800kbps):

30-minute programme: 160MB
60-minute programme: 320MB

Standard Quality is the default setting for downloads on mobile devices. You can switch between Standard and High Quality downloads in Settings on the �� iPlayer app.

Run out of storage space on your device?

To free up space you can either delete downloaded programmes in the Downloads section of the �� iPlayer app, or you can delete apps and files elsewhere on your device, perhaps old apps that are no longer used, or files that are backed up elsewhere.

Can I download programmes using my mobile data?

Yes, you can. Click on the settings cog in the app, then make sure the Download over mobile networks toggle is switched on. Downloading via mobile data will be switched off by default. If you can't see this option, make sure the app is up to date.

Downloaded programmes are available for the same amount of time as they are on the app. After the expiry, they will no longer be available. For more information, have a look here: How long am I able to watch a programme once it's been downloaded?

�� iPlayer is a free service, but your mobile operator may charge for the data you use on their network. If you’re unsure how much mobile data costs or what your data allowance is, please contact your mobile network operator.

Can I store programmes on an external device?

Unfortunately not. You can only download programmes to the internal storage of your phone or tablet and not to external storage devices such as an SD card, USB device, or disc.

Our obligations to rights holders state that a downloaded programme can only be played on the device it was downloaded on.

First, remove the application

Go to Applications
Ctrl + click �� iPlayer Downloads
Select Move to trash

Then, remove the �� iPlayer Downloads folder

This is located in the Movies folder. The full path location is User > USER-NAME > Movies > "�� iPlayer Downloads"

Go to your folders
Select the User folder
Select your user name
Select the Movies folder
Click on the Preferences folder
Delete �� iPlayer Downloads

Uninstalling version 1.x (e.g. v1.14.2*)?

There are a couple of other folders called ��iPlayerDownloads that need to be deleted at the following locations, using the same method as above:

User > USER-NAME > Library > Preference > ��iPlayerDownloads
User > USER-NAME > Library > Application Support > Adobe > AIR > ELS > ��iPlayerDownloads

If you can’t see the Library folder:

Open the Finder
Choose Go from the menu bar
Choose Go to Folder (or Shift + Cmd + G)
Type ~/Library into the text box and click Go

To check what version you have installed:

Open the Downloads application
Click on Settings at the top right of the screen

Why can't I copy downloads on the mobile/tablet app?

Downloads are saved on the �� iPlayer app on the specific device you download them on, so they can’t be transferred to other devices.

If you change over to a new device, you won’t be able to copy your downloaded programmes. However, they will still be available to watch on your old device until their expiry date, or you can download them again on your new device.

How do I delete downloads on a mobile or tablet?

To delete a fully downloaded programme:

Open the �� iPlayer app and select who's watching
Tap on Downloads

To delete a download, use the 'edit' button (pencil icon) at the top of the screen, or simply swipe left on the download you would like to remove. If you'd like to remove all downloads in a series, you can delete multiple episodes on the main Downloads menu.

To delete individual episodes from a series, tap on the series and either tap the pencil icon and select the individual episodes you'd like to delete, or swipe left on the episode then tap on the bin icon.

To delete programmes from the queue:

Open the �� iPlayer app and select who's watching
Tap Downloads
Programmes that are currently downloading will have a circle with an 'x' in the middle. Tap this to cancel the download.
Confirm that you would like to delete the download.

If you experience problems with �� iPlayer, uninstall and reinstall the app. Be careful to note that this will, unfortunately, mean you’ll lose all the programmes you’ve downloaded.

Download programmes from �� iPlayer to watch anywhere, whether you're at home or on the go. So even if you're miles from WiFi, or your broadband's buffering, you can still enjoy your favourite shows.

On a computer or laptop

We have now closed the Desktop Downloads App. Find out more here: Why can I no longer access �� iPlayer Downloads?

All of our live and on-demand programmes can be streamed on your computer by heading to the website: bbc.co.uk/iplayer. Once you've found the programme you want to watch, just press the play button. This does require you to be connected to the internet.

You can also still download your favourite programmes on your mobile device, and add programmes to your Watchlist to return later.

On a mobile or tablet

On compatible mobiles and tablets, you can download programmes using the �� iPlayer app. Just tap Download underneath the episode you want to download. How long can I keep programmes I've downloaded?

Downloaded programmes are available for the same amount of time as they are on the �� iPlayer website or app. If a programme is available for 30 days, you'll have until the end of that same 30-day period to watch the download.

At the end of that availability period, downloaded programmes will be deleted, so keep an eye on the expiry date of each programme you download to make sure you don't miss out!

You need the �� iPlayer app to download programmes. Find out if the �� iPlayer app is available on your device in the following page: Can I use �� iPlayer on my mobile or tablet?

Find the episode you want to download.
Tap 'Download' underneath the programme description.*
Tap on 'Downloads' along the bottom menu to access and see the progress of your downloads

How long will it take to download a programme?
Download time depends on the speed of the connection and the size of the programme. As a very rough guide, it shouldn't take more than 10-15 minutes to download a 30-minute programme.
Can I change the video quality of my downloads?
Yes, you can choose to download programmes in Standard Quality or Higher Quality. Standard Quality programmes are produced at 800kbps and Higher Quality programmes are produced at 1500kbps.

To toggle between Standard Quality and Higher Quality for downloads, tap Settings and then toggle the Higher Quality Downloads option. This setting will only apply to new programmes that you add to the queue.
