The Living Daylights

The Living Daylights

The Living Daylights live in session

It's a prestigious time for The Mix Introducing - this evening, as joining the crew in the sauna are the show's first ever signed act. We think?

The Living Daylights

Dan, Kurt, Sam, Matt and Johno (although his real name is Alex but no-one calls him that apparently) make up punk-rock quintet The Living Daylights. Their moniker hasn't come from the A-Ha track or the Bond film of the same name, instead inspiration came from one of the band's own lyrics, "we were going to call ourselves Daylight Never Dies" says guitarist Matt, "but we thought that was too 'gothy' for our music", so the band put their heads together, threw in a couple of what they called 'thought grenades' and it became the Living Daylights.Ìý

Those familiar with the local music scene might already know some of the band members; Johno previously plied his trade in Rides the Bus, Sam in Analysis Failed, while Dan and Matt formed half of legendary local punk band MCD. The Living Daylights came together in November 2007, when the duo decided to make serious their acoustic side project, drafting in the others from their respective acts to form the line up that joined us in the studio.

After self-releasing their E.P. in January 2008 and an extensive tour in the UK, the band signed a record deal with Fond Of Life Records who released their debut album Ways To Escape in late 2008. Since then the band have toured extensively around Europe, performing in Germany, Austria, Italy, France, Belgium and Slovenia. Despite their success the band still know that it all has to come to an end, "it's depressing after a tour to go back to work" but without employment there would be no Living Daylights and they appreciate that fact, "they're good to us (employers), giving us time off when we need it."

But you can't expect a band to go on such an extensive tour and not come back with some stories. The Living Daylights don't disappoint, for example, they blagged their way into a hotel where they had access to all the facilities and err… sandwiches; being left in a club for the night with an open bar, Sam's attempt to converse with the local Italians… in Spanish, and so on. Perhaps the best is telling a Slovenian journalist in a television interview that they were bigger than Oasis. Nice.

"It's surreal seeing our CD on sale alongside our favourite bands" says vocalist Sam, listing some of modern punk rock's biggest; Hot Water Music, Rise Against, Alkaline Trio. The five-piece are genuinely flattered by the attention that is being bestowed upon them and they are more than appreciative, but what of the future? "We'll be touring most of this year," says Sam adding, "We'll be looking to write some new material toward the end of the year". It couldn't have happened to a nicer group of guys and The Mix Introducing wishes them the best of luck.
