Winning the 主播大秀 Music Sound of 2016 poll has left me feeling pretty stunned at the end of one of the most emotionally and physically intense years of my life. I cannot thank the 主播大秀 enough for their continued support, and everyone who voted for me.

A native of Little Chalfont in Buckinghamshire and now resident of London, Jack has been supported by 主播大秀 Introducing throughout his career when he began uploading tracks to the Introducing Uploader in 2009. It led to his first radio play by 主播大秀 Introducing in Beds, Herts and Bucks and he won the 主播大秀 Music Introducing Artist of the Year Award in December at the 主播大秀 Music Awards, which was broadcast on 主播大秀 One. He has also been cutting his teeth at festivals, and brought down the house at last year’s Radio 1 Future Festival.

Jack’s first release, the limited edition Remnants EP, married distinct elements of electronica with classic guitar-fronted song-writing. He sold out a UK tour last year and supported Mumford & Sons on their UK tour dates. His hotly anticipated debut album, Phase, is due to be released this February.

A longlist of the top 15 artists for 主播大秀 Sound Of 2016 was published in November and the top five acts have been revealed each day this week by Radio 1 DJs Annie Mac and Huw Stephens on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show.

Canadian singer/songwriter Alessia Cara was this year’s runner-up, followed in third place by singer, song-writer and producer NAO, who performed on the 主播大秀 Introducing stage at Glastonbury last year. Blossoms, a five-piece band from Stockport, were fourth on the list, and the electronic music producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mura Masa and the musical collective WSTRN tied in fifth position.

Radio 1 DJ Huw Stephens says: “Jack Garratt is an incredibly exciting artist. He's influenced by and understands a lot of different genres, from blues to electronica, and through his song-writing and live performances has become something of a phenomenon both live and on record. He has a huge year ahead of him, his music is being heard around the world and he'll release his debut album. He’s a very worthy winner of the Sound of 2016!”

George Ergatoudis, Head of Music for 主播大秀 Radio 1 & 1Xtra, says: “I'm delighted that Jack Garratt has won the 主播大秀 Music Sound of 2016. He is a gifted songwriter and a phenomenally talented live musician who wins people over with every performance. The 主播大秀 is in a unique position to be able to find and nurture exciting new talent such as Jack. He first appeared on the Radio 1 playlist back in September 2014, but it was his amazing set at Radio 1's Future Festival in January 2015 that fully convinced us he had a bright career ahead. Jack totally deserves all the success coming his way in 2016.”

Around 140 influential music industry experts including DJs, critics and bloggers voted in this year’s list. They were asked to name their three favourite new acts by 主播大秀 News.

Pundit Anna Karatziva, Head Of Talent & Music, MTV Networks, predicts big things for Jack: “I first saw Jack Garratt perform at the Great Escape in Brighton early last year and was blown away with his performance and his personality on stage. We were all mesmerized throughout the entire set and from then I knew he was going to be successful.”

The list was started in 2003 and last year’s winner, British soulful synth-pop trio Years & Years, have since gone on to obtain the number one spot in both the single and album charts in the UK. Previous winners have included award-winning Adele and Sam Smith, LA pop band HAIM and Ellie Goulding.

Other artists in the top five in previous years include Angel Haze and CHVRCHES (2013), Frank Ocean and Azealia Banks (2012), James Blake and The Vaccines (2011), Hurts (2010), Florence and the Machine, La Roux (2009), Duffy (2008), Klaxons (2007), Plan B (2006), Bloc Party (2005), Franz Ferdinand (2004), Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Dizzee Rascal (2003).

The list was compiled using recommendations from 144 influential UK tastemakers, who were asked to name their favourite new acts.

The music experts included radio DJs and producers, festival organisers, music streaming curators, newspaper critics, magazine and website editors and respected bloggers.

All participants were asked to name their favourite three new acts, who could be performers from any country and any musical genre, whether or not they are signed.

They cannot have been the lead artist on a UK top 20 single or album before 30 October 2015.

They must not already be widely known by the UK general public (for example, a member of a hit band going solo or a soap star, a finalist of a UK talent search show such as X Factor or The Voice in the last three years - ie 2013 onwards).
