Austria is currently governed by a coalition between the ruling People’s Party and the far right Freedom Party, and has taken over the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union with the motto 'A Europe That Protects' - which aims to focus efforts on the fight against illegal immigration into the EU.

Chairing the debate at the the Theatre Museum in Vienna, the 主播大秀’s Jonathan Dimbleby will be joined by a panel of influential politicians and thinkers who will be debating questions from the audience. The panel will include:

  • Peter Launsky Tieffenthal - Government Spokesman and Former Ambassador
  • Beate Meinl-Reisinger - leader of NEOS, the Liberal Party
  • Eva Blimlinger - Rector of the Academy Of Fine Arts
  • Claus Raidl - former President of the Austrian National Bank

Mary Hockaday, Controller, 主播大秀 World Service English, says: “Debate is at the heart of the 主播大秀 World Service, and each month we take our flagship debate programme to a different city around the world. This is a pivotal time in Austrian politics, and we want to hear what issues really matter to Austrians.

"This event allows people to put their questions directly to our panel, and have their voices heard around the world.”

Martin Gilbert, Director Austria, British Council, says: “British Council is delighted to be bringing World Questions to Vienna in partnership with the 主播大秀. We look forward to what will be a lively debate at this exciting time for Austria, currently holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union until the end of 2018.

"Connecting people in Austria and around the globe is at the heart of our cultural relations work and open and independent debates like these make a powerful and lasting contribution to a more open and connected world.”
