Taking its cues from a real world scheme in Europe, it’ll be fascinating to see what impact our young people have on the workings of the hospital, but also to witness how the patient stories alter our volunteers' perspective on the world.

The Great NHS Experiment (w/t), a four-part series to broadcast next year, is inspired by an existing social care programme in Germany and will follow a group of 18-23 year olds from all walks of life as they volunteer at Royal Derby Hospital.

Working in different wards across the hospital this will be a life-changing experience as they learn for themselves what life on the frontline of the NHS is really all about.

From maternity to A&E, paediatrics to elderly care, participants will assist NHS staff in their daily work playing a critical role in delivering patient care. The series will explore the impact this unique social experiment will have on both the patients and staff and as well as on the young volunteers themselves.

It will see if they can really take a burden off the staff’s shoulders and begin to help alleviate some of the challenges and pressures faced by the NHS today.

Taking on some of the toughest jobs, the volunteers get a chance to perform real tasks across all departments and make a significant impact - from assisting the crash team in A&E to holding a cancer patient’s hand in their last moments of life, to bed-bathing dementia patients.

Armed with determination and two weeks of training our volunteers join a brilliant team of doctors, nurses, porters, domestic staff, midwives, registrars and healthcare assistants. Guiding them through the intricacies of hospital life will be the senior nurses and matrons, mentoring our group through one of the toughest experience of their lives.

The group will be living together and the 主播大秀 cameras will still be rolling at the end of each day to capture their thoughts, anxieties and revelations about the experience with one another.

The series is now looking for volunteers from all walks of life from across the country.

David Brindley, Head of Commissioning, Popular Factual and Factual Entertainment, says: “We’re very fortunate to be working with the Royal Derby Hospital on this exciting project.
