Those unable to hop on a broomstick and travel to Derry will be able to experience the magic and atmosphere via outside radio broadcasts and a televised concert - Samhain Live - taking place at a number of city centre venues.

Samhain is a Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. Traditionally, it is celebrated from 31 October to 1 November. It is also thought to have been a time of communing with the dead – hence the ghosts and ghouls.

Many scholars believe that All Saints' Day (or All Hallows' Mass, celebrated on November 1) and Samhain, are so close together on the calendar that they influenced each other and later combined into what we now know as Hallowe’en.

Lighting the fire under 主播大秀 Northern Ireland’s Samhain Live cauldron is Mark Patterson from 1.30pm-3pm on 主播大秀 Radio Foyle. Mark will be broadcasting live from the Guildhall and welcoming some special guests into the Radio Foyle ‘crypt’.

That evening on 主播大秀 Radio Ulster at 7pm, Blas will also be coming live from the Guildhall, where presenter Fearghal MagUiginn will cast his spells and haunt listeners with music and some spooky stories, while Conall Ó Máirtín will navigate between the worlds of the living and the dead with live links from the crowds outside.

From 9pm-11pm on 主播大秀 Radio Ulster and 主播大秀 Radio Foyle, Stephen McCauley, Mark Patterson and Cheylene Murphy will present a Halloween Special show live from the Guildhall, with coverage of the Hallowe’en parade, Samhain Live concert and the ‘spooktacular’ fireworks display.

Stephen will be introducing the music and interviewing the performers while Cheylene and Mark will capture the magic of the carnival, pick out the best costumes, and speak to families and revellers about what makes Derry the best place in the world to be at Hallowe’en.

Television viewers can enjoy the Samhain Live concert from 9.30om-10.30pm on 主播大秀 Two Northern Ireland.

Presented by comedian and Derry girl Diona Doherty and local musician J.J. Ó Dochartaigh, Samhain Live will bring you the very best of Irish music from custom-built stages at the Guildhall, Craft Village and Echo Echo dance theatre.

Performers will include: Le Galaxie, Jerry Fish, Gavin James, Saint Sister, Declan O’Rourke, Wyvern Lingo and ROE.

Samhain Live on 主播大秀 Two Northern Ireland, 主播大秀 Radio Ulster and 主播大秀 Radio Foyle will bring audiences right into the heart of the festivities, to experience the unique atmosphere of Hallowe’en in the city of Derry.

Samhain Live is a Gifted Empire Productions event for 主播大秀 Gaeilge and TG4, with support from Northern Ireland Screen's Irish Language Broadcast Fund.
