Britain’s Fat Fight with Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall continues on his mission to help reverse the nation’s obesity crisis by challenging some of the biggest high street brands and stores to make their products healthier. He discovers that our brains have a superhuman response to certain combinations of sugar and fat, which explains why we find several well-loved products irresistible. But are the manufacturers who sell these products, which include healthy looking snack bars, prepared to do anything about it?

In Newcastle, he succeeds in his mission to get the entire city to lose 100,000 lbs, and is delighted when the idea is picked up by lots of local community groups across the country. In Torquay he meets Paul and his daughters who regularly eat more than the Government recommend. But how will they cope with having smaller portion sizes? And can Hugh cut down his own chocolate and wine consumption? And, after 100,000 people signed his letter to the Health Secretary, Hugh finally gets to meet Jeremy Hunt...

Nadiya's Asian Odyssey

Nadiya Hussain will travel to Thailand, Cambodia and Nepal in a new two-part travelogue series. It will combine cookery, travel and genealogy, as Nadia sets off on a personal journey to trace her family connections in the region, after taking a DNA-based genealogy test which linked her heritage to Thailand, Cambodia and Nepal.

Nadiya Hussain was born and brought up in Britain, but her family is from Bangladesh. Having recently learnt that there is more to her heritage, in the first programme Nadiya will explore the people, places and food of Thailand and Cambodia. Nadiya’s search for connections in these countries takes her from the world-famous temples of Angkor Wat in the north of Cambodia to a small island with a traditional Muslim culture in the deep south of Thailand.

In the last leg of her travels, she takes a trip to the remote Himalayan country of Nepal as part of her adventure to further explore her identity. Her journey begins in Kathmandu, where she joins a supper club run by local young foodies who share with her the vastly varied cuisine of their country - from the yak butter devoured by Sherpas in the mountains to the snails eaten in the southern flood plains.

The Truth About The Menopause

The menopause currently affects 13 million women in the UK. And yet it’s wildly misunderstood. What can the latest science tell us about what it is – and what we can do about it?

Broadcaster and journalist Mariella Frostrup first became aware of the shame and secrecy surrounding the subject during her own menopause. Now in this personal film she wants to bring this great taboo out into the open. She meets the scientists who have uncovered the cause of hot flushes - and developed a brand new drug to treat them. She finds out if taking hormone replacement therapy is dangerous. She discovers if men also have a menopause, and witnesses a cutting-edge procedure that could actually reverse the menopause.

Whatever your age or your gender it will affect you or someone close to you. It’s time we all understood the menopause - and started talking about it.

The Truth About Antibiotics

Angela Rippon goes on a personal journey to investigate one of the biggest modern health crises facing the world today.

Antibiotics save millions of lives every year by fighting bacterial infection, but now antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest threats facing our generation. “The timebomb is ticking and in the very near future, the antibiotics we have now will no longer work,” says Owen Gay, Executive Producer.

Angela Rippon contracted tuberculosis as a child. Luckily a new antibiotic, Streptomycin, had just been released. Angela says: “Without antibiotics, I wouldn’t be here today.”

In this documentary Angela meets the victims of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, discovers why the pharmaceutical industry hasn’t developed new antibiotics, and joins the scientists who are trying to find solutions.

Without Limits

Following the critically-acclaimed series Without Limits: Vietnam, this two-part observational documentary sees a team of injured British and Australian veterans embark on an extraordinary 1000-km expedition across Western Australia’s remote Kimberley region.

Their journey heralds the start of the Invictus Games in Sydney, a global sporting event for wounded, injured and ill servicemen and women. Invictus patron HRH The Duke of Sussex offers his advice and support to a five-person team, led by former Parachute Regiment officer Martin who was injured in Afghanistan in 2007, and who joined the Duke on an unsupported trek to the North Pole as filmed in the 主播大秀’s Harry’s Arctic Heroes. The Duke of Sussex meets Martin - and British veterans Shaun and Keanie - before they head to Australia, where they join up with their Aussie teammates Dean and Matt.

These veterans are all dealing with visible and invisible challenges of life in civvy street after medical discharge from the Armed Forces. Shaun lost both his legs and was blinded when he stepped on an IED in Afghanistan - he spent six years in hospital and has regained some sight in one eye.

Keanie endures chronic pain in her back and hips after an injury during training - she also suffers from severe anxiety and depression. Both Dean and Matt were injured whilst serving in the Australian Army and both suffer from chronic pain and severe PTSD.

This emotional, hard-hitting, yet uplifting series reveals their often brutal backstories and sees them pull together as they take on tough off-road driving in adapted 4x4s and physically demanding treks in some of the most stunning and extreme locations on the planet. In Sydney, the team is reunited with the Duke of Sussex for the start of the 2018 Invictus Games.

Supermarket Shopping Secrets

Gregg Wallace returns to lift the lid on how the supermarkets are using the latest science and technology to bring us our food. In this third series he’s joined by consumer journalist Nikki Fox (pictured), and together they discover how the food retailers are having to innovate in the digital world to stay ahead of their rivals.

Across the series Gregg and Nikki look at the hottest new trends in health, such as nitrite-free bacon and a replacement for salt using seaweed; follow wine-buyers of a new type of sparkling rose that uses the same technique as champagne to produce bubbles at a fraction of the price, and go behind the scenes of online supermarkets who are revolutionising home delivery - with robots.

And, as society becomes more aware of the negative impact food production can have on the environment, greater pressure is being put on supermarkets to take action. We look at the how they’re reducing palm oil in their products and fighting the war on plastics.

Each story will bring its own sense of unique insight into the way supermarkets work, hearing from real world characters who deliver the food we all eat, unpack the science of how supermarket foods are selected and explore what this tells us about our own tastes and lifestyles.
